Al Nassr : Cristiano Ronaldo nourrit déjà des regrets, il veut filer à l’anglaise

Published

on

Rangers 1-2 Motherwell: ‘Phenomenal away win’ a ‘huge blow’ for Scottish Premiership leaders

Published

on

“A huge blow – absolutely huge.” Former Celtic and Rangers striker Kenny Miller could have been talking about either side of the Old Firm any time they slip up unexpectedly on league duty.

That he was speaking after the Ibrox side were stunned out of the blue at home to Motherwell just when they seemed to have their city rivals on the back foot could have special significance with games running out in the title race.

Bar a chastening defeat away to the reigning champions at the end of December, everything had been going swimmingly for Rangers since Philippe Clement inherited the manager’s job from the hapless Michael Beale in October.

The only other points dropped came before that in a November draw at Aberdeen and, since losing to Celtic, the Ibrox side had gone on an impressive 11-game winning run.

However, Motherwell brought that to a shuddering halt at Ibrox, their 2-1 victory being their first win away to Rangers since 2015 – and their first in 19 meetings overall with the Glasgow side.

‘I thought this would come much earlier’

Mothewell's Theo Bair and Lennon Miller celebrate
Theo Bair (left) scored and troubled Rangers defence all afternoon

Clement has already proven himself a canny and considered public speaker and was not about to lambast his players for handing Celtic the chance to return to the top when they visit Hearts on Sunday.

“I didn’t expect to have this moment after five months in the building,” he said, suggesting “luck” was not on Rangers’ side on this occasion. “I thought it would be much earlier.

“They are very disappointed and a lot of heads are down. But you need to cope with it, take the right lessons and learn from it to become better.”

Clement stressed he has “a rule” that he does not expect new players to settle for a year, so it will be to the Ibrox stalwarts rather than January additions he will look to most for leadership.

Worryingly for the Belgian, many are the same players who have – bar one title-winning season under Steven Gerrard – all too often stumbled when they have had the chance to consolidate a lead over Celtic or usurp them.

“Now I’ll get to know my team even better,” Clement said. “I know them really well already, but now I’m going to see who’s going to be the guys to stand up after a disappointment. I don’t doubt it too much.”

Miller was among the majority surprised Rangers lost at home to a side who had only ended a 12-game run without an away win by beating bottom club Livingston in midweek.

“I don’t think many in the 53,000 at Ibrox would have expected to see that type of result,” the former Scotland striker told BBC Sportsound.

“We always thought the title race could go to the wire, that there would be twists and turns over the final 10 games, but I don’t think anyone could have seen that one coming.

“It’s given the edge now to Celtic. Can they go and take advantage of that tomorrow? That’s the big question.”

Rangers will have plenty of time to stew over their situation as they have a Europa League last-16 meeting with Benfica and a Scottish Cup quarter-final with Hibernian to negotiate before returning to league action.

“The last time they got beat was at Celtic Park and a lot of questions were asked of them then,” Miller said. “Is this Rangers side going to bounce back the same way?”

How Motherwell produced ‘phenomenal’ result

This was no backs-to-the-wall, smash-and-grab Motherwell win.

Theo Bair, a striker reborn since joining Motherwell, gave centre-half Connor Goldson a torrid time on top of his opening goal and the visitors had other chances aside from Dan Casey’s winner after James Tavernier’s penalty equaliser.

Motherwell women coach and former Scotland midfielder Leanne Crichton said: “From the get-go, Stuart Kettlewell’s got his game-plan spot on in the way he wanted to play it and nullify the threat of Rangers.

“In the middle of the pitch, they matched up Rangers and probably outplayed them at points in terms of securing the ball.

“He will be immensely proud of his side. They will have been bitterly disappointed with the two late goals against Celtic last weekend, but to back that up with a historical win at Ibrox is incredible.”

Indeed, Kettlewell was particularly pleased at the way Bair and strike partner Jack Vale “carried a threat” all afternoon.

Bair’s statistics have gone from one goal in 38 with St Johnstone to 11 in 32 with Motherwell.

The Fir Park side are now only two points off sixth place, and former Motherwell captain Stephen Craigan insists they “now have a real opportunity” to finish in the top half.

A far cry, he points out, from a few months ago when “people have been calling for Kettlewell’s head”.

“I’ve played here in 7-0s and 7-1s and 6-0s,” he recalled. “And it’s horrible. You leave feeling empty.

“Those players should let it soak in and embrace it because it doesn’t happen very often when you are at a small club. They deserved something out of the game and managed to do it. Phenomenal.”

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool: Referee analyst Mark Clattenburg bemoans officiating for Darwin Nunez winner

Published

on

Mark Clattenburg, now a referee on BBC TV show Gladiators, officiated in the Premier League between 2004 and 2017

Nottingham Forest referee analyst Mark Clattenburg bemoaned the officiating in the build-up to Liverpool’s dramatic winner at the City Ground on Saturday.

Clattenburg added he was not allowed into the referees’ dressing room to speak to Paul Tierney after the game.

Forest players surrounded Tierney after full-time, fuming at the decision to give Liverpool the ball following a head injury to Ibrahima Konate.

The home side had possession when play was stopped.

However, Tierney restarted the game with the ball at the feet of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Darwin Nunez then scored the winning goal one minute and 50 seconds later.

“[Forest] should have had the ball back,” Clattenburg, who took up his new role at the City Ground last month, told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“If the referee stops the game, he has to give the ball back to the team in possession. That was Forest.”

Forest coach Steven Reid was shown a red card for remonstrating with Tierney after the full-time whistle.

Clattenburg, who was spotted with referees’ chief Howard Webbexternal-link during Forest’s FA Cup defeat by Manchester United on Wednesday, officiated in the Premier League for 13 years between 2004 and 2017.

As per International Football Association Board (Ifab) rules, the former official was right in that the game should have restarted with a Forest ball.

The decision did not lead directly to the goal, however, with Forest regaining possession before Nunez eventually scored the winner.

“When [the ball was] given to the keeper, with Liverpool scoring afterwards, you can see why [Forest] are aggrieved,” Clattenburg continued.

“I haven’t spoken to the referee – I’ll leave that to the club. I went to go into the referee’s dressing room [after the game] but he wouldn’t allow it.”

Speaking on Match of the Day, former Premier League striker Alan Shearer said the referee had dropped a “big clanger”.

“He’s got it totally wrong,” he said. “Hudson-Odoi has the ball and then he blows. He then gives the ball back, unchallenged to the [Liverpool] goalkeeper, which is totally wrong.

“It should be a Forest ball on the wing where it was touched. If you drop it to where Forest should have had it, everything changes.”

In August, Forest lodged a complaint with referees’ body the PGMOL over the performance of the officials in their 3-2 defeat at Manchester United.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo was also furious with the decision to allow two of Brentford’s goals in the Bees’ triumph over Forest in January, while he also felt his team should have been awarded a “clear penalty” for a foul on Taiwo Awoniyi in last month’s defeat by Newcastle.

“Forest have felt a lot of decisions have gone against them,” Clattenburg said. “Everyone is upset and sad that they’ve lost this way.

“We need to hope the club’s luck changes in the future.”

Ollie Watkins: Aston Villa striker dreaming of England Euro 2024 squad

Published

on

Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins has overtaken his personal record of 15 Premier League goals in a season – set last campaign – with 11 games to go

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is dreaming of a Euro 2024 place with England after moving on to a career-best 16 Premier League goals this season – so is it already nailed on?

The 28-year-old, who has won nine caps, netted twice in the first half of Villa’s ultimately dramatic 3-2 win over Luton.

Watkins is the second top scorer in the Premier League this season, and tops the way for goals and assists combined with 26.

Nobody else is in double figures for goals and double figures for assists.

Watkins was included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2020 but did not make the final cut, and was not involved in the 2022 World Cup.

He is waiting for his first crack at a major tournament – and it seems inevitable it will come this summer in Germany.

“If I said I wasn’t thinking about the Euros I would be lying to you,” he told BBC Sport after his double at Luton.

“I have played Premier League football for a number of years now. I missed out on the last Euros squad because it was my first season in the Premier League.

“I am scoring, I am established, so it is down to the manager if he wants to pick me.”

Former England striker Alan Shearer said on Match of the Day: “He’s on the plane. His bags are packed. He’s got his boarding pass.”

Watkins’ first against Luton was a header and his second was a confident finish after controlling Douglas Luiz’s long ball over the top.

The only English player to have scored more goals than Watkins this season in Europe’s top leagues is Harry Kane, England’s all-time record scorer, who has netted 27 times in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich.

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp, watching for Sky Sports, said: “Harry Kane will be our number nine. With those numbers, only an injury will stop Ollie going. He’s been that good. He’s so well rounded.

“He’d be a great player to bring off the bench, if you want to throw on two [strikers] if you need a goal. He’s been magnificent. His all-round play has improved immeasurably.”

Watkins is only the fourth Villa player to net 16 goals in a Premier League season and the first since Christian Benteke a decade ago.

“I want to score as many goals as possible. I feel like I am doing that. I am confident and I am playing my best football,” Watkins said.

“I think the manager (Unai Emery) has a lot of faith in me. He keeps working with me.

“My game understanding has got a lot better. I am looking forward to the last stretch and the end of the season.”

Emery said: “His commitment is brilliant and the consequence is this when he works hard every day.

“He is always working for the team and then he is working to score and also hold up the ball and fighting with the centre-back.”

Ex-Newcastle striker Shearer said: “He’s having the season of his life. He’s in the form where, as a forward, you go on the pitch not hoping to score, but expecting to score.”

Among Watkins’ rivals to be Kane’s understudy are Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, but he has outscored the pair of them this campaign.

England play Brazil and Belgium in friendlies this month, the only games before June’s Euros warm-up games against Bosnia and Iceland.

Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia are in England’s Euro 2024 group.

Luis Suarez scored his first goals for Inter Miami and Lionel Messi also netted twice as they thrashed Orlando City in the MLS.

Suarez, who failed to score in his first two MLS games, netted twice in the opening 11 minutes from Julian Gressel passes.

Suarez unselfishly set up Rob Taylor before Messi netted from close range and headed in a Suarez cross.

Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Suarez joined Miami in December after spells with Nacional in his native Uruguay and Brazilian side Gremio.
