Champions League cult heroes: Gaizka Mendieta – the nearly man
Spread the love

Two Champions League finals, two defeats. No silverware but football fans around the turn of the century will not forget Gaizka Mendieta or Valencia.

For supporters in the UK, or in this writer’s case Ireland, Mendieta came out of nowhere in 1999 to become one of Europe’s most exciting players.

His peak would not last too long, but what a peak it was.

To celebrate the BBC having Champions League highlights this season, we will look at a Champions League cult hero each week there are games.

In the days of fledgling internet, before social media existed – and unless you had satellite television – the free-to-air Champions League and major tournaments were the way you discovered foreign players for the first time.

Mendieta was in his mid-20s when Valencia, for two years, were the talk of the town.

In 1999-2000, the Basque playmaker ran things for Hector Cuper’s Los Che. The classy midfielder, his hair blowing in the wind as he drifted past players, made key passes and scored significant goals.

He had a rocket of a shot from long range, quick feet that helped him elude opponents and could play centrally or on the wing. In summary, the ideal attacking midfielder.

Other stars of the team were Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, France full-back Jocelyn Angloma, future Barcelona midfielder Gerard and Argentina forward Claudio Lopez.

Valencia had to come through a round of qualifying and were then unbeaten as they finished top of a group containing Bayern Munich.

Mendieta scored a fantastic strike in a 2-1 win at Rangers in that group, with a perfect hit on the bounce from the edge of the box that went in via the post.

“Mendieta is the type of player every team would love to have – not just skilful, but with imagination, and full of running and working for his team,” said Rangers boss Dick Advocaat afterwards., external

They also got through a second group stage – a short-lived Uefa addition – with Mendieta scoring penalties against Fiorentina and Bordeaux.

Then they eliminated Lazio and Barcelona in the two knockout rounds. He scored in both legs against Barcelona, including a fine 20-yard effort at the Nou Camp.

Mendieta’s performances were so impressive that Lazio and Barcelona ended up being his next two clubs.

Sadly for Valencia, they played Real Madrid in the final and lost 3-0. It was Real’s first European Cup win since 1966. A few more have followed since then.

The following year, nobody was going to underestimate Valencia or Mendieta – yet teams still struggled to stop them.

Vicente, Didier Deschamps, Pablo Aimar and John Carew were some of the iconic names to join them that season.

It was a season that will especially be remembered by a host of English teams’ fans.

Valencia finished above Manchester United in the second group phase – then knocked out Arsenal in the quarter-finals and Leeds United in the semi-finals.

Mendieta netted their third in the second leg against Leeds, with a wonderful low drive into the bottom corner from distance.

Bayern Munich awaited in the final in the San Siro. Three minutes in, Mendieta was fouled and stepped up to take the penalty, slotting it into the bottom corner beyond Oliver Kahn.

But Bayern came back, with Stefan Effenberg scoring a second-half penalty – and the German giants won the shootout 5-4. Captain Mendieta converted his spot-kick.

That was Bayern’s first European Cup since 1976; Valencia had been the opponents as two of Europe’s great clubs ended their Champions League droughts.

Mendieta was named the best midfielder at the Uefa Club Football Awards in both those seasons.

Wales boss Craig Bellamy ‘quietly confident’ of Aaron Ramsey coaching future

Wales boss Craig Bellamy ‘quietly confident’ of Aaron Ramsey coaching future
Spread the love

Cardiff are currently seeking a 12th permanent manager in 14 years, having sacked Erol Bulut last month following the worst start to a season in the club’s history.

Omer Riza is currently interim coach, having led the Bluebirds to their first Championship win of the season at the eighth attempt, beating Millwall 1-0 last week before a 1-1 draw with Bristol City on Sunday.

Riza has said he wants the job on a permanent basis, although Ramsey is one of a number of other names who have been linked with the role.

But Bellamy dismissed suggestions that Ramsey – who already has his Uefa A licence, one below the Pro licence needed to work at the highest levels – could be a candidate to take over the Bluebirds as a player-coach.

“I don’t see that at the moment [for Ramsey], no,” Bellamy said.

“I saw Vinny [Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany] do that at Anderlecht [where Bellamy was the Belgian club’s under-21 coach] and it was really difficult.

“That was the first time I’ve seen it close up, I’ve not been exposed to that playing-wise. I would probably not recommend it, just my experience with Vinny doing it at Anderlecht.

“I felt that he felt it was going to be one or the other – he was going to carry on playing or he was going to be a manager, and then he chose the manager route.

“So yeah, I believe that’s a difficult one.”

Bellamy said that he often involves Ramsey in Wales’ off-field preparations and has seen that potential – not just first hand in sessions at the Wales National Football Development Centre in Newport, but ever since Ramsey was young.

“I speak to Aaron quite a lot, I try and involve him a lot in tactically what we look to do,” Bellamy said.

“He comes down to Dragon Park as well to see me quite a bit, so we go through certain stuff. I definitely have a very good relationship with Aaron.

“By knowing his father from the same area, I knew Aaron since he was five; I knew this kid was going to be a professional footballer at the age of five, which is very rare by the way.

“So it allows us to have that good communication.

“I’m really disappointed for him that he picked up an injury, because especially the game against Turkey [Bellamy’s first game in charge, a goalless Nations League encounter in Cardiff] he was exceptional.

“He did everything we asked him to do, the role he played, the chances we created, a lot came from Aaron.

“But he won’t miss too much… I believe he will be with the camp as well during this period, so that’s helpful because it’s another set of information we want to try and feed into over a 10-day period.”

The head of women’s refereeing in England, Bibiana Steinhaus-Webb, is leaving the role to take up a position with Fifa.

The German, who is married to men’s referee boss Howard Webb, joins the world governing body as its new head of women’s refereeing.

The 45-year-old previously enjoyed a stellar career as an official and joined Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in 2021 when the organisation took charge of officiating in the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship.

Under her leadership the select group of officials for the women’s professional game has doubled in size.

In a statement the PGMOL said it wanted to build “on the progressive foundations” set by Steinhaus-Webb and thanked her for her “immense contribution”.

Man City v Premier League legal case verdict – what does it all mean?

Man City v Premier League legal case verdict – what does it all mean?
Spread the love

This case is not directly related to the hearing into Manchester City’s 115 charges for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules, which began last month.

City were charged and referred to an independent commission in February 2023 following a four-year investigation.

It is alleged City breached the Premier League’s financial rules between 2009 and 2018.

“I don’t think this will have too much of a direct impact but this will probably give Manchester City a slight bounce because they’ve been found to be correct in a couple of narrow areas,” said Leaf.

“But equally, I think the Premier League will be relieved, especially after the recent Leicester decision where their rulebook was heavily criticised by an esteemed panel.”

He was referring to Leicester’s successful appeal against an alleged breach of Premier League financial rules – which means they are set to avoid any punishment.

Leicester successfully argued that because their 2022-23 accounting period ended on 30 June, they were not longer bound by Premier League rules – because they had just been relegated to the Championship – and so could not be found in breach.

Leaf added: “The fact that the majority of the Premier League’s rules have been found to be lawful and OK will probably come as a relief to them.”

BBC Sport’s chief football news reporter Simon Stone said: “The fierce manner in which City have responded to the verdict, allied to the knowledge they are currently fighting the substantive issue of 115 financial breaches, suggests they have spotted a weakness in the Premier League’s regulations which they will look to exploit as far as they can.”

England’s Morgan Gibbs-White, Ezri Konsa and Kobbie Mainoo have been ruled out of England’s Nations League games in October.

The Three Lions host Greece at Wembley on Thursday before playing Finland in Helsinki on Sunday.

Interim manager Lee Carsley is not planning to add anybody to the squad in their place.

The other 22 players named in his initial squad have all reported to St George’s Park.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Gibbs-White, who made his England debut last month, was injured while having a shot blocked in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Aston Villa defender Konsa suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s goalless draw with Manchester United.

United midfielder Mainoo was replaced in the closing stages of that match.

Health campaigners criticise SPFL for Carling sponsorship deal

Health campaigners criticise SPFL for Carling sponsorship deal

Big Partnership A number of Scottish football trophies, on podiums with the SPFL and Carling logos across themBig Partnership

Carling will partner with the SPFL for the next three seasons

Health campaigners have criticised the Scottish Professional Football League’s new sponsorship deal with a major lager brand.

The SPFL announced the partnership with Carling for the next three seasons, which will see the brand promoted at league and Premier Sports Cup matches.

However Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) said the deal will lead to more consumption of alcohol during a public health crisis.

Figures released last month by National Records of Scotland revealed there had been 1,277 alcohol deaths in Scotland in 2023, which marked the highest number in 15 years.

The partnership will see the company marketed as the official beer of the league.

The SPFL said this would include a number of “engaging opportunities for supporters” to get involved with.

‘Out of step’

Dr Peter Rice, the chairman of SHAAP, said mass marketing lager to fans is “out of step” with the need to tackle the harm alcohol can cause.

He added: “All the evidence shows that the more we are exposed to mass marketing of this sort, the more alcohol is consumed and therefore the more damage to our health is done.

“Right now Scotland is in the grip of an alcohol public health crisis that needs to be addressed – encouraging people to consume more is not the answer.

“This lack of duty of care to fans flies in the face of our research which shows that while many football fans recognise the need to generate income for Scottish football, there is not so much appetite for that income to come from the alcohol industry.”

Alison Douglas, the CEO of Alcohol Focus Scotland called the decision “particularly disappointing” given the recent statistics regarding alcohol deaths.

She said: “This marketing will be on full display to children across Scotland who idolise their teams and their favourite players. Big alcohol brands capitalise on this, signing deals with sports teams and leagues as a means to ‘recruit the heavy using loyalists of tomorrow’.

“The evidence is overwhelming, alcohol marketing increases alcohol consumption and early onset alcohol use by children and young people.”

‘A rich history’

Dr Rice called on authorities to “aim a bit higher” with sponsorship deals, and both SHAAP and AFS pointed to Scottish women’s football as an example of this – with SHAAP itself having partnered with the women’s game since 2019.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive, said the deal was “fantastic news” as the company has “a rich history” of supporting the Scottish game.

Carling previously sponsored Celtic and Rangers, as well as the Scottish national team.

A number of clubs in Scotland have alcohol related sponsorship deals.

Lee Willett, Carling brand director at Molson Coors Beverage Company, said they were “committed to supporting the beautiful game at every level here in Scotland”, citing grassroots initiatives.

The partnership was secured for the SPFL by the Scottish Football Marketing venture.

Chelsea: Sonia Bompastor says decision to postpone Man Utd game ‘not good’
Spread the love

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor says the decision to postpone their Women’s Super League match against Manchester United was “not good”.

They were due to face United at home on Sunday but it was postponed with a week’s notice due to a conflict with Chelsea’s European schedule.

Chelsea face Real Madrid in the Women’s Champions League group stage on Tuesday, just two days after the United game was set to take place.

“We were disappointed as players and staff. I think everyone has to understand we were supposed to play,” said Bompastor.

“We were in a very good team dynamic and I think not having the opportunity to play changed everything in preparation for the game with Real Madrid.

“When you have the opportunity to play one game a week, with this decision being made to postpone the game, now we have been out of competition for 10 days which is completely different.

“If you look at the situation, the decision is not good. I think it is not good for all the English clubs who are in the Champions League competition.”

Chelsea are joined in the group stages by WSL rivals Arsenal and Manchester City this season.

The WSL has been taken over by a new independent company this season – Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) – and Bompastor says the league “need to know about the rules”.

“For them it’s good to have our feedback and as I always said to the league, I think we should be proud to have three English clubs in the Champions League this year,” added Bompastor.

“All the decisions in the league this year have to be made in order to help the English clubs compete in the Champions League.”

Former Netherlands midfielder Neeskens dies aged 73
Spread the love

Netherlands legend Johan Neeskens has died at the age of 73, the Dutch football federation has confirmed.

The former midfielder was part of the Ajax and Netherlands teams credited with creating “total football” in the 1970s.

“With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend,” the KNVB federation said in a statement.

Neeskens was capped 49 times for the Dutch and was part of the teams that finished runners up at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups.

At Ajax he helped them win the European Cup three times and their domestic league twice.

Neeskens also spent five seasons at Spanish giants Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey and European Cup Winners’ Cup with them.

“His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team,” the KNVB added.

“With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights and iconic penalties, [he] will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country.”

After retiring as a player in 1991, Neeskens coached several clubs and was also an assistant coach with the Dutch national team from 1995 to 2000.

Manchester City: Verdict reached in Premier League APT legal case
Spread the love

The verdict has been announced in Manchester City’s legal case against the Premier League over its associated party transaction (APT) rules.

City had some complaints upheld, with two aspects of the APT rules deemed unlawful by a tribunal.

But the Premier League says the tribunal rejected the majority of Manchester City’s challenges and “endorsed the overall objectives, framework and decision-making of the APT system”.

APTs are aimed at the value of sponsorship deals with companies linked to clubs’ owners.

This case is not directly related to the Premier League disciplinary commission which will hear 115 charges against City for allegedly breaching its financial regulations, some of which date back to 2009.

Paul Pogba: Cas gives reasons for reducing doping ban

Paul Pogba: Cas gives reasons for reducing doping ban
Spread the love

The former Manchester United player argued that his offence “was not intentional and was the result of erroneously taking a supplement prescribed to him by a medical doctor in Florida”.

Cas said, external Pogba did not “seek a determination of no fault or negligence” but, instead wanted his ban reduced to 12 months, although Nado believed the four-year punishment should have stood because “the player’s recklessness was serious”.

The Cas panel “partially upheld the appeal” but “determined, however, that Mr Pogba was not without fault and that, as a professional football player, he should have paid a greater care in the circumstances.”

The decision can be appealed against to the Swiss Federal Tribunal within 30 days on limited grounds.

Pogba was provisionally suspended in September 2023 after being randomly tested following Juventus’ first match of the 2023-24 season on 20 August.

The positive test was confirmed by Nado in a second sample in October, and the anti-doping prosecutor’s office requested a four-year suspension.

“Finally the nightmare is over,” said Pogba when the reduction of his ban was revealed last week. “I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again.

“I play with integrity and, although I must accept that this is a strict liability offence, I want to place on record my thanks to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s judges who heard my explanation.
