Newcastle United and England goalkeeper Nick Pope suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder during the 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday.

He joins an already substantial Magpies injury list, with striker Callum Wilson and defender Dan Burn among those out.

“I don’t know what the future holds for Nick, whether he’ll need an operation or not,” Howe told BBC Sport.

“It looks bad. It looks like a dislocation of his shoulder, which he has done before. He had it operated on and came back successfully.

“We’ll get it checked out and fingers crossed he’s back soon.”

Pope has made 62 appearances since joining Newcastle from Burnley in the summer of 2022, playing in all 14 of their Premier League games so far this season.

“It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of time,” Howe added on TNT Sports. “It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way and they are normally the more serious ones.

“You could see he was in distress and it looked like he dislocated his shoulder just diving.”

Just over two hours after Gareth Southgate learned who England’s group-stage opponents will be at Euro 2024 next summer, what promises to be one of his major selection issues was put into sharp focus at St James’ Park.

It did not go unnoticed that one of the reasons for this was the difficulty Marcus Rashford was experiencing after being switched from his preferred left side to the right, to accommodate Alejandro Garnacho.

Going forward, Gordon was everything Rashford wasn’t – incisive, threatening and dangerous.

Going backwards, Rashford failed to track Livramento and was exposed trying. As former Newcastle forward Alan Shearer put it on Match of the Day: “He didn’t look at it and didn’t look interested.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag didn’t want to get into the details around Rashford’s collapse in form. Opposite number Eddie Howe skirted around the whole England issue.

But it exists. Summarising the game for TNT Sports, Jermaine Jenas underlined the issue.

“Gareth Southgate has to give some serious consideration to selecting Anthony Gordon,” he said.

“We know he is loyal to players he has selected before, but compared to Marcus Rashford, his [Gordon’s] work-rate is far superior at the moment. You cannot ignore what Gordon is doing.”

Ten Hag will talk to Rashford about form – not the media

Last season, Rashford scored 30 goals. In the post-World Cup period in particular, he was lethal. This term, he has scored twice, against Arsenal at the beginning of September and a penalty last week at Everton.

When asked about Rashford’s form by TNT Sports, Ten Hag’s reply was cryptic.

“I talk with him about that, not the media,” said the Dutchman.

Pressed further in his post-match press conference, Ten Hag was slightly more expansive, although it was in defence of a player for whom the underlying acceptance is that he is way below the standards he is capable of.

“I know this issue is coming up,” he said. “Marcus is investing a lot. We support him and he will return to his form. He will recover and he gets all our support.”

It is March before Southgate has to pick another squad and evidently form can turn around quite quickly.

However, it is impossible not to compare Rashford’s contribution with that of Gordon, who has now scored in four successive home Premier League games and added the name of Manchester United to that of Arsenal and Liverpool as proof of his impact against the biggest teams.

“He is playing at a very high level and has been all season,” said Howe. “Now he is getting the goals and you need headlines if you are to force your way into the England squad with the competition there is.”

Gordon has ‘burning motivation to be the best’

Gordon wasn’t an instant success after arriving at St James’ Park from Everton in January.

Indeed, until the last day of the season, when he scored against Chelsea, many wondered whether his end product would prove to be worth the £45m Howe committed on the 22-year-old, who is attracting admiring glances from the Scottish FA.

“You sign players because you like their ability,” said Howe. “When you bring them into the group, there is always a period where you have to earn their trust and them you.

“There was no stage where I didn’t trust him. He just had to learn how we did things.”

That process is complete, with Howe believing there is more to come from a player who has shown a pleasing attitude towards self-improvement.

“There is a lot more to come but I would say that,” added Howe.

“Anthony has a desire to get better every day. Sometimes we have to take him off the training pitch when we feel he has done enough.

“He has this burning motivation to be the best. We are loving working with him.

“There is an openness and inquisitiveness. He wants to ask questions, start dialogue and debate his game. That is great from our perspective.”

Paul Heckingbottom was called a “goner” by one pundit but the Sheffield United boss says he “can walk out of this stadium with my head held high” after a morale-crippling 5-0 defeat by Burnley.

Burnley started the day bottom, had lost every one of their home games this season and had never won a Premier League game by five goals – and they obliterated the Blades.

With one win in the Premier League and 39 goals conceded in 14 games, Sheffield United are bottom and four points from safety.

“I know how hard I work for everyone at the club and that won’t change,” said Heckingbottom, who has been Blades boss since 2021 and led them to promotion last season.

“The staff will do the same, we will continue to give everything we have got with what we have got. The first time I got asked this, however, many months ago [about his future]… you are asking the wrong person.

“The fans are right to shout that wasn’t good enough and I was almost singing along with them at one point.”

‘It could’ve been two reds… it was so stupid’

It all started after 15 seconds, the quickest Premier League goal of the season. Burnley took the kick-off, played it back to keeper James Trafford and then went forward quickly with Jay Rodriguez heading in Charlie Taylor’s cross.

“The game plan wasn’t to dangle two legs in two tackles and then allow a delivery into the box,” said Heckingbottom.

“We picked a team we thought was experienced, aggressive and could manage these situations. To start the game like that put us on the back foot.”

Former England captain Alan Shearer, on BBC Match of the Day, called the Blades “a disgrace”.

“Burnley battered Sheffield United,” he said. “If you have a team who have given everything, you say ‘fair enough’. The fans accept that, the manager accepts that.

“Today they were a disgrace. From the first minute, they lost three tackles in three or four seconds. It summed them up.”

Jacob Bruun Larsen doubled Burnley’s lead but the moment the game really ebbed away from them was Oli McBurnie’s red card.

The Scot had been lucky to avoid a straight red earlier when he was booked for elbowing Dara O’Shea in the face. And then he shoved his arm into the same player’s face again and got a second booking, for his second red card of the season.

Asked if McBurnie had let the team down, the boss said: “He has let me know; he knows he has.”

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, watching the game for the BBC, called the striker an “idiot”.

“To go and do the same foul, for which he was lucky not to see red the first time, when your team is 2-0 down and the manager is under pressure, is so stupid from McBurnie,” he said.

“He got two yellows but he could easily have gotten two reds.”

‘The fans will know who stuck at it for 90 minutes’

The 10-man Blades made a triple change at the break and reached the 73rd minute without any further damage. But the Clarets scored three more in the final 17 minutes and hit the woodwork another two times.

“Some things weren’t good enough,” said Heckingbottom. “It was more about which shape would keep us in the game. We did what we wanted and then were were sloppy. One or two didn’t manage the situation, the occasion and it became really difficult.

“Sometimes, players can play their way out of the team.

“One or two stuck to the task and cause but whether those players are good enough to remain at this level… You can still see that, the fans will know those who have gone out there and stuck at it for 90 minutes.

“We want everyone to do that and if we are not good enough, then we are not good enough. We have done that in games but that has to be a minimum. You can’t be scared to take the ball and give it away or be scared to put your head in to stop a goal.”

‘I think Heckingbottom is a goner’

Sheffield United have conceded 39 goals in 14 games so far. Only one team in Premier League conceded more in their opening 14 fixtures – Barnsley let in 40 in 1997-98. They were relegated.

Burnley fans sang that Heckingbottom would be getting sacked in the morning, with some Blades fans on social media calling for the board to make a change.

“If the fans start changing, it changes the dynamic,” he said. “It doesn’t [change] how I feel, it doesn’t change my job.

“Whether you are a player getting the stick or manager, I said to the players in there I can walk out with my head held high, I know I can, but you can’t kid people.”

Sutton said afterwards: “I think Paul Heckingbottom is a goner.

“Losing consecutively, and so convincingly, to two relegation rivals in Bournemouth and now today against Burnley, I don’t think he can survive that.

“To be humiliated like they were at home to Bournemouth last week and now to concede five goals today, I think patience will run out.”

No Premier League teams have switched manager since the start of the season – compared with five changes by this stage of last term. How long will that record last?

Anthony Gordon scored a 55th-minute winner as Newcastle United outplayed and defeated Manchester United for the second time in just over a month.

In-form Gordon tapped in Kieran Trippier’s low cross at the far post to give Newcastle a richly deserved success that took them above their opponents and to within reach of the Premier League’s top four.

It came 31 days after Eddie Howe’s side recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory at OId Trafford in the Carabao Cup.

Howe’s already injury-ravaged side should have been in front before the break as Alexander Isak’s shot was deflected narrowly wide by Harry Maguire before Trippier’s brilliantly struck free-kick bounced to safety off the underside of the bar.

When a goal finally came for Newcastle, there was no surprise it should come from Gordon, whose left-sided partnership with Tino Livramento had been too much for Manchester United to cope with.

Newcastle’s win means they have beaten Manchester United in three consecutive games for the first time in more than a century.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka denied Newcastle a second with an inspired goalline block, only for Fabian Schar to do something similar to keep out Sergio Reguilon’s effort, the nearest the visitors came to avoiding their sixth defeat of the campaign.

However, it was in trying to save that Pope was hurt, with the England man immediately signalling he could not continue.

Gordon and Livramento torment Man Utd

The loss of Pope will be a bitter blow for Howe, who is without so many senior players as his side battle on four fronts.

That they were able to shrug off such setbacks – and the gut-wrenching concession of that injury-time equaliser to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League in midweek – says plenty about their character.

Gordon followed up his goals against Arsenal and Liverpool with another one against a big-name opponent.

The £45m has now been involved in seven goals – five goals and two assists – in his last eight league games, more than in his previous 45.

It was Gordon’s partnership with Livramento on Newcastle’s left-flank that rattled the visitors throughout a one-sided contest.

Livramento’s presence underlined the positive about a spate of injuries; players get a chance that otherwise might not come their way.

Although Newcastle spent an initial £32m on the former Southampton full-back in August, he has had to bide his time when it has come to starting games.

However, with Dan Burn out, a space has opened up in Howe’s team and Livramento has slotted right in.

This was his third start in a week and he could not be accused of a gentle introduction given he has faced two of England’s biggest clubs, either side of that match against Paris St-Germain.

Offered the chance to keep surging down the wing in support of Gordon, Livramento did exactly that, repeatedly unsettling the visitors to the extent they were fortunate not to be behind at the break.

The tally of 14 shots faced – the most Manchester United have defended in the first half of a league game since they were four down at Manchester City in October 2022 – owed much to Livramento.

Though it was Gordon who won the game, Howe will not overlook the 21-year-old’s contribution to another fabulous night at St James’ Park.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany says his side “deserved” their first home win of the Premier League season after thrashing Sheffield United 5-0.

Dwight McNeil’s clinical strike gave Everton their first win since they had 10 Premier League points deducted as they hung on to beat Nottingham Forest.

The win also helped Sean Dyche’s side, bottom at kick-off after Burnley’s 5-0 win over Sheffield United earlier, move off the foot of the table to 18th.

It heaps pressure on Forest boss Steve Cooper after consecutive home defeats.

Forest threw everything at Everton’s goal as the game headed towards the final whistle and the visitors were indebted to Jordan Pickford’s late heroics.

The England goalkeeper raced off his line to make a tackle to deny Anthony Elanga and produced a fine diving save to keep an effort from Murillo.

Everton’s margin of victory might have been greater had Beto not fluffed a golden chance and McNeil seen a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.

Forest, who had earlier seen Morgan Gibbs-White strike the side netting and Murillo hit the base of the post, were left to rue missed chances of their own.

Gritty win for Dyche’s battlers

Everton’s first game after they were handed a 10-point deduction by the Premier League for financial rule breaches ended in anti-climax last weekend.

The Goodison Park crowd were galvanised by the sense of injustice but on the pitch they surrendered to a tame 3-0 defeat to Manchester United..

Against Forest, the visiting fans continued to vocalise their views of the biggest sporting sanction meted out in Premier League history.

This time they had something to celebrate at the final whistle though, as Dyche’s side produced a determined performance bristling with the kind of unity which will serve them well as they look to climb out of the drop zone.

A familiar concern of last season’s relegation battle – just who will score the goals to keep them up? – had initially looked to damage those hopes.

Beto, handed an opportunity in place of the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, blazed over with the goal at his mercy midway through the first half.

Dyche turned on his heels and exhaled his frustrations with the Portuguese forward’s finishing in the direction of the bench.

The Everton manager’s breath cut through the night air again moments before half-time when McNeil saw his effort blocked on the line by Murillo.

By full-time though, Dyche was cheerfully slapping the backs of Everton’s players after victory was secured thanks to McNeil’s fine strike at the back post on 67 minutes.

Forest unable to deliver Cooper’s message

Curiously, before kick-off, Cooper emerged from the tunnel before both teams and applauded all four sides of the City Ground then made his way to his seat in the dug out.

The 43-year-old Welshman, who is respected and liked by supporters for his achievements with Forest, received a generous reception.

But whatever message Cooper had intended to send – to Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, or otherwise – was not matched by the result and he was left picking the bones out of their seventh defeat in 14 matches.

His side have now lost consecutive Premier League games at the City Ground for the first time since a run of three defeats in August and September last year.

Equally worryingly, they are now winless in the last 10 top-flight matches without Taiwo Awoniyi, having lost six of those. It looks like the Nigeria striker will not be back until early 2024 because of a groin injury.

The 26-year-old aggravated the problem playing for Nigeria during the international break and has had an operation for the issue.

Cooper will want to address the unwanted statistics and find some cutting edge elsewhere – and quickly – if he is keep both his job and Forest out of trouble.

Scotland will play Germany in the opening match of Euro 2024 after being drawn in the same group as the hosts.

Wales would be in Group D with France, the Netherlands and Austria at next summer’s tournament should they qualify via March’s play-offs.

Germany will face Steve Clarke’s Scotland in the opener at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday, 14 June.

Euro 2020 finalists England will begin their campaign on 16 June against Serbia.

Defending champions Italy, who beat Gareth Southgate’s side on penalties in the 2020 final, are up against three-time winners Spain, Croatia and Albania in Group B.

The final of Euro 2024 will take place on 14 July at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Scotland will be ‘supremely confident’

Former Scotland forward James McFadden said Scotland “will be confident they can get out of” a difficult Group A that features three-time winners Germany.

“It’s a tough group, I’m not going to lie and say I’m delighted with the group,” he told BBC Two.

“The opening game against Germany will be a great occasion and all the pressure will be on Germany to go and get a result and that should suit Scotland because against the better sides, they tend to do OK.”

Scotland finished bottom of their group at Euro 2020, losing to Croatia and the Czech Republic, while they played out a goalless draw with England.

McFadden added: “I think Scotland will give a good account of themselves and be a very good side because they have had the experience of playing in the Euros before this group and the disappointment of those games. They will want to put it right.

“The players will be supremely confident going into this group stage.”

England ‘can’t complain’ about Group C

Southgate led England to the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley, which Italy won 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Former Three Lions striker Alan Shearer said Southgate will be “extremely happy” with England’s draw, with Serbia and Slovenia outside the world’s top 30, while 1992 champions Denmark are ranked 19th.

“I don’t think England can complain with that group,” Shearer said.

“I think it’s pretty favourable when you look at some of the teams that have been drawn out against each other.”

Ex-England forward Chris Sutton added that it was a “pretty soft” group for England.

Despite it not appearing the toughest group, Southgate says all the teams in Group C are “more than capable”.

“You can look at it on paper but the games aren’t played on paper,” he said.

Analysis

Phil McNulty, chief football writer

England will be highly satisfied with their draw for the Euro 2024 group stage and while it looks like a tougher route for Scotland, they will feel they can make their way through into the knockout phase.

As for Wales, if they get to Germany via the play-offs they will face a very hazardous assignment to take their campaign any further than the group.

England manager Gareth Southgate will ensure there is no complacency but a group containing Serbia, Denmark – who they beat in the semi-finals of Euro 2020 at Wembley – and Slovenia will surely hold no terrors for a side now ranked third in the latest Fifa rankings.

Scotland get the glamour of the opening game and the chance to make an instant impact against hosts Germany.

They will start that game as underdogs but manager Steve Clarke will know Germany are nowhere near the superpower of old and very much in transition under new coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Hungary and Switzerland are in with the Scots, who have been built into a solid and quietly confident unit under Clarke’s astute guidance. This is a group to certainly give them a measure of optimism.

If Wales make it to Germany they will have a daunting task as they will go into a group with the Netherlands, World Cup runners-up France and Ralf Rangnick’s Austria. Even if they successfully navigate the play-offs they will be rank outsiders.
