Unai Emery extends Aston Villa contract to 2027

Published

on

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has extended his contract with the club until 2027.

Villa were 16th in the Premier League and fighting relegation when the Spaniard took over from Steven Gerrard in November 2022.

But, after a remarkable turnaround, Emery, 52, guided Villa to a seventh-place finish to qualify for the Europa Conference League, the club’s first participation in European football since 2010–11.

This season, they sit fourth in the Premier League with Champions League qualification in their sights. They are six points clear of Tottenham, who have two games in hand.

Renowned for his expertise in European competition, Emery has also steered Villa into a semi-final in the Conference League, where they will face Greek side Olympiakos with the hope of reaching a first European final since 1982.

Emery won the Europa League in three consecutive seasons with Sevilla before also lifting the trophy in 2021 with Villarreal.

He spent 18 months in charge of Arsenal, which was widely considered to be unsuccessful despite the Gunners finishing fifth in the Premier League and reaching the 2019 Europa League final, where they lost to Chelsea.

FA Cup final: Man Utd and Man City to kick off at 15:00

Published

on

The men’s FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United will kick off at 15:00 BST.

For the repeat of last year’s final between the same teams, the match has been bought forward from 17:30 BST.

The Football Association said the kick-off time was moved after being agreed with “the clubs, local authority, members of the safety advisory group and broadcasters”.

City and United will meet at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 25 May.

Last year’s final between the two was the first all-Manchester FA Cup final, with Pep Guardiola’s side winning 2-1.

The kick-off in 2023 was also moved to 15:00 BST following police advice, the first final to take place at that time for 12 years.

Andriy Lunin : Un avenir incertain au Real Madrid ?

Published

on

Chelsea v Arsenal: Cole Palmer could miss Premier League match

Published

on

Chelsea are ninth in the Premier League – three points off seventh place – and Palmer’s absence would be a blow for their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

However, it would be a boost to Arsenal’s aspirations of winning the Premier League for the first time in 20 years.

The Gunners’ hopes were dented by a 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on 14 April but they recovered with victory by the same scoreline at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Tuesday’s game will be Arsenal’s fourth in 10 days, but manager Mikel Arteta insists his side are not being affected by the quick turnaround between fixtures.

He said: “We are keeping on doing what we have been doing – focusing on the next game and the task ahead, preparing really well – as we have done in the time we have had available to us.

“The boys look ready to go again.”

Asked about the prospect of facing a Blues side without the goal threat of Palmer, he added: “I have no control over that, only on my players who are available.

“Whatever they [Chelsea] put out there, when you look at the squad quality they have is great.

“They are doing very well, they have good results recently and have been playing much better than their place in the table suggests.

“It will be a tough match, for sure.”

Defender Jurrien Timber is out for Arsenal as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury sustained on his debut. He is set to play for the Gunners’ Under-21s this week.

Fabio Cannavaro appointed new manager of Serie A club Udinese

Published

on

Former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro has been appointed manager of Udinese until the end of the season.

Cannavaro, who lifted the 2006 World Cup as Italy captain, has replaced Gabriele Cioffi who was sacked after a 1-0 defeat by fellow strugglers Verona.

That loss left Udinese 17th in Serie A – one place above the relegation zone – and level on 28 points with 18th-placed Frosinone.

Cannavaro has signed a deal which runs until the end of June.

He will be in charge when Udinese finish their match against Roma by playing the remaining 18 minutes on Thursday.

The original game was suspended with the score at 1-1 after Roma player Evan Ndicka collapsed on the pitch.

The Ivory Coast defender was later released from hospital, with Roma saying the 24-year-old had experienced chest pains on the pitch but did not have a heart attack.

Cannavaro was one of the finest centre-backs of his generation, winning the Ballon d’Or in 2006 and played for the likes of Parma, Juventus, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

He retired from playing in 2011 and went into coaching in Asia.

Cannavaro managed clubs in China and Saudi Arabia, while also spending six weeks in charge of the Chinese national team in 2019 before a stint as boss of Benevento.

Erik ten Hag: Manchester United boss will leave – Chris Sutton

Published

on

Simon Stone, BBC Sport chief football reporter

Since his co-ownership was announced on Christmas Eve, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and new United director Sir Dave Brailsford have presided over a complete overhaul of United’s backroom team.

The latest appointment was Jason Wilcox as technical director after his exit from Southampton was successfully negotiated.

United hope to secure the services of Dan Ashworth as sporting director but there is still no agreement on that with Newcastle and as it presently stands, it could be September, once the summer transfer window has closed, that the deal is finally completed.

Ten Hag is clearly under pressure.

However, his supporters continue to make the comparison with Mikel Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first season as Arsenal boss but also finished eighth twice and then fifth before getting the squad he wanted.

Their win percentage is broadly similar, which fuels belief the situation is not quite as bad as some of the recent performances have made it appear.

Irish Premiership: Larne inch closer to title with Linfield draw

Published

on

McKee wasted a good chance to put Linfield back in front five minutes before the break, blazing over the crossbar after Daniel Finlayson had knocked down Millar’s free-kick into his path.

Linfield started the second half with renewed intent and squandered another fine opportunity two minutes after the restart as Graham headed over the crossbar from Millar’s pin-point cross.

Lee Bonis had a fine opportunity to win the game and the Gibson Cup for Larne on 77 minutes.

Chris Shields, who was playing in defence due to Linfield’s injury crisis, uncharacteristically played a loose back pass which Bonis latched on to and he drove forward before being thwarted by Chris Johns in his attempt to loft the ball over the goalkeeper.

Aaron Donnelly also saw a low shot drift wide for the champions, who had until that point appeared content to settle for the draw which would all but secure back-to-back titles.

Linfield brought on the returning Jordan Stewart, returning after a long injury lay-off in their attempt to find a late winner.

It was fellow forward McKee who went closest to scoring, as he diverted Kirk Millar’s free-kick goal wards, but it hit the outside of the post and went wide, with Ferguson beaten.

They continued to press hard, but to no avail as Larne extended their unbeaten run in the league to four games and all but ensured the Gibson Cup will stay at Inver Park this season.
