Spain floods: Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti says games should have been postponed
Spread the love

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has said it made “no sense” for games to go ahead at the weekend, and Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he would have cancelled them.

Real host AC Milan in the Champions League group stages on Tuesday.

Ancelotti won eight trophies, including two Champions League titles, as Milan manager from 2001 to 2009.

Real lost 4-0 to Barcelona on 26 October, and two days later Real striker Vincius Jr finished second behind Rodri for the Ballon d’Or.

“It was supposed to be a special game for me, facing Milan. But there is no meaning in talking about football now,” said Ancelotti.

“It has been a difficult week, not because of what happened with the Ballon d’Or or El Clasico. It happened and that’s that – congratulations to the winners.

“Our sadness is not about that. It is for what is happening here in Spain.”

A year’s worth of rain has fallen in parts of the Valencia region.

On Sunday the king and queen of Spain were pelted with mud and other objects by angry protesters during a visit to the town of Paiporta – one of the worst-affected in Valencia.

Objects were also thrown at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was quickly evacuated from the area.

Barcelona experienced flooding on Monday after torrential rain.

More than 60 flights at El Prat Airport were cancelled, delayed or diverted and rail services were suspended.

Familiar faces back for Scotland in Nations League

Familiar faces back for Scotland in Nations League

Scotland welcome back a host of regulars, including “big character” John McGinn, for Nations League matches against Croatia and Poland.

Scott McKenna, Jack Hendry, Greg Taylor, Lawrence Shankland and Tommy Conway also return.

There is a first selection for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Cieran Slicker, who has 17 caps at under-21 level, and uncapped Rangers midfielder Connor Barron retains his place after a late call up for the 0-0 draw at home to Portugal.

Che Adams is included despite limping out of Torino’s defeat by Fiorentina on Sunday.

“He’ll be scanned and assessed by his club,” said manager Steve Clarke who has no plans to draft in another forward if Adams is ruled out.

Croatia visit Hampden on 15 November, with the campaign ending in Warsaw three days later.

Scotland prop up Group A1 with one point from four matches, three behind Poland who won 3-2 in Glasgow in the the opening round of games.

Croatia beat Scotland 2-1 in Zagreb last month.

McGinn was one of many to miss the October double-header, but the Aston Villa captain has started the last four games for his club after a hamstring problem.

The 30-year-old midfielder has 18 goals in 71 Scotland appearances.

“He’s obviously a big character in the camp and a big player on the pitch as well, so it’s nice to have John back,” said Clarke.

“Over the four games we’ve played, the performances have been pretty good. We haven’t had the points reward we wanted and hopefully this month we can add a few more.”

James Forrest drops out, along with Liam Lindsay, Andy Irving, Jon McCracken and Jack MacKenzie, who was another late call for the October matches.

Kieran Tierney, Aaron Hickey, Angus Gunn and Kevin Nisbet are currently out with injuries.

Lewis Ferguson is not included, having only just returned to the Bologna first team after a six-month lay-off.

The same applies for Nathan Patterson, who is back in the Everton squad but yet to feature this season.

“When you look at the long-term injuries, it’s better that they get minutes with their clubs to build up robustness,” said Clarke.

RB Leipzig look to kick-start campaign at Celtic Park

RB Leipzig look to kick-start campaign at Celtic Park
Spread the love

Their strong league start has been built on a solid, mean defence, with just five conceded after that loss in Dortmund.

Key to that has been the form of the Hungarian international keeper Peter Gulacsi, who kept the score down on Saturday.

He suffered an horrific knee injury when the sides met in Leipzig in 2022, which kept him out for 16 months. But he has battled back to reclaim his number one status and will be aiming to carve out a better memory from this meeting with Celtic.

At the other end of the pitch, there is a dual threat provided by the pairing of Belgium’s Lois Openda and the young Slovenian Benjamin Sesko.

The duo combined to give RB Leipzig the lead in the Westfalenstadion at the weekend and will likely provide Cameron Carter-Vickers and company with a few headaches on Tuesday.

Both came to the club in the summer of 2023 and contributed greatly, Openda ending the season with 28 goals.

It is Sesko who is slightly ahead on seven at the moment, scoring all three of his team’s Champions League goals. Celtic will do well to prevent him adding to those.

Vinicius Jr: Why fans of Real Madrid forward believe Ballon d’Or triumph will come, despite 2024 setback
Spread the love

With Vinicius Jr, it remains clear to many of his supporters it is only ever going to be a matter of when, not if.

Having been tipped from the very start to reach the top of the world, the Real Madrid forward suffered a setback on Monday by finishing second behind Rodri in the Ballon d’Or – having been a clear favourite for most of the build up.

The decision certainly caused a stir with Real Madrid not sending representatives to the ceremony in protest against the award, and journalists and politicians in Brazil describing it as an ‘injustice’.

The 24-year-old’s response to not winning was posting on X: “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready.”

And, before Real’s Champions League match with AC Milan on Tuesday, Vinicius is ready to show this was merely a blip on his rise to the top of the world.

“He has an incredible courage, he always had,” Carlos Noval, a former Flamengo youth football co-ordinator who has known Vinicius since the age of 10, told BBC Sport.

“Along the way, you saw people watching him for the first time and realising right away he was built differently.

“I remember him playing in the Copa Votorantim, which is like the under-15 Brazilian championship, and absolutely killing it. It was like two, three goals each game. He was unstoppable.

“Then, at some point, a Manchester United scout sat by my side and said, ‘I’ve never seen a 14-year-old boy do what he does – take great care of him off the pitch because on the pitch he’s going far, very far’.”

He has gone very far, but it has by no means been a smooth ride.

Even growing up in Sao Goncalo, a city outside Rio de Janeiro controlled by drug gangs and where you simply cannot move freely, did not prepare Vinicius for what he would face in Spain following his move in 2018 from Flamengo to Real Madrid, aged 18.

Since he became a key player in Real’s team, La Liga has referred 21 racist incidents involving the superstar to local prosecutors, as a result of regular abuse from the stands, monkey chants and an effigy hung from a bridge being directed his way.

In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for hate crimes against Vinicius, in the first conviction for racism-related cases in Spanish football stadiums.

“I’m not a victim of racism. I’m the tormentor of racists,” the 24-year-old posted on social media afterwards.

Bristol Downs League: the 130-year-old competition where every game is at home
Spread the love

The referees at the Bristol Downs League are not always amateur.

When Richard Morris is not running the line at a League One or League Two game, he returns to where he started in order to offer his services.

“It’s a chance for me to meet up with old friends and remember how I came up through the system and where I came from,” he said.

“It’s really important to remember who supported you so you can support the next generation.”

A week previously, he was officiating in top-of-the-table Portsmouth’s game against Cheltenham Town, before joining the 20-30 referees that gather every Saturday to officiate on the Downs.

“When you walk in the referees dressing room at the Downs there’s such a feeling of community there,” Morris added.

“So many of the guys have been coming up refereeing games on the Downs for years and years and they really are like a family.”

A stalwart of the Bristol refereeing community is Bill Bombroff. Now aged 86, he officiated matches in the old First Division at clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur and in the European Cup.

Today he is the referees advisor for the Downs League, helping train new officials for the league.

“He will give you so much information, he will take you for the first week, ring you or email you on the Monday, little pointers on where you should go,” said referee Nick Baddell.

“He will leave you then for two to three weeks, then he’ll go to watch you again to see whether you’ve picked up on those bits of information he thinks you should work on.”

Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce coach slams Turkish referees after win at Trabzonspor
Spread the love

Jose Mourinho condemned refereeing standards in Turkey after his Fenerbahce side scored a 102nd-minute winner to cap a dramatic game against Trabzonspor.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager sprinted on to the pitch and attempted a knee slide as Sofyan Amrabat’s late goal in stoppage time earned a 3-2 victory on Sunday.

However, Mourinho was unhappy with home team Trabzonspor being awarded two penalties – both after video assistant referee (VAR) consultations – and thought his side should have had a spot-kick before Amrabat’s late winner.

The 61-year-old even questioned why he had come to Turkey.

Speaking at length to broadcaster beIN Sports, Mourinho criticised the performance of referee Oguzhan Cakir and VAR official Atilla Karaoglan.

“I blame the Fenerbahce people that brought me here,” said Mourinho, who took over at the club in June. “They told me only half of the truth.

“They didn’t tell me the whole truth because if they told me the whole truth, I wouldn’t come.

“But, with half of the truth and my boys, we fight opponents and the system.”

Mourinho added: “He [Karaoglan] was alert to give the two penalty decisions which the referee didn’t give and then he was having Turkish tea when it was a clear penalty for us and he didn’t give it.”

Fenerbahce moved to second in the Turkish top flight, five points behind leaders Galatasaray, after their win.

“The man of the match was Atilla Karaoglan,” added Mourinho.

“We didn’t see him but he was the referee. The referee was just a little boy that was there on the pitch, but the referee was Atilla Karaoglan.

“He goes from the invisible man to the most important man in the match.

“I think I am speaking on behalf of every Fenerbahce fan – we don’t want him again.

“We don’t want him as a VAR. We don’t want him on the pitch but, on the VAR, even less.”

Points needed to win Premier League: Will fewer be required this season?
Spread the love

Despite defeat on Saturday, City are only one point short of the 24 they had at this stage last season, before going on to win a fourth successive title with 91 points.

City became the first team in English top-flight history to reach 100 points in 2017-18 – dropping just 14 points – and they have broken the 90-point barrier on three other occasions under Guardiola.

That has forced their rivals to reach new heights, with Liverpool exceeding 90 points three times in the past six years – but winning the title only once.

Six of the last eight champions have won more than 90 points, but prior to 2017 only four teams had reached that tally in the 21 years since the league was reduced to 20 clubs.

Asked whether he expects those standards will drop this season, Guardiola said: “Of course, absolutely.

“If we’d had five more days to prepare and recover [for Bournemouth], maybe we would have been better. Or maybe not, who knows.

“I talked about the calendar for the season when we were winning, not just now because we lost a game. The reality is they won, we congratulate them.”
