Fiorentina 1-2 West Ham United: Jarrod Bowen goal decides Europa Conference League final

West Ham ended their 43-year wait for a major trophy as Jarrod Bowen scored a last-minute goal to beat Fiorentina and win the Europa Conference League in Prague.
The final seemed to be heading for extra time after Said Benrahma’s second-half penalty was cancelled out just seven minutes later by a well-taken effort from Giacomo Bonaventura.
It was a testy and sometimes bad tempered game – and at one point it got downright ugly as Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was struck by a plastic bottle thrown from the West Ham section.
The match was settled in the most dramatic manner.
Bowen timed his run to perfection as Lucas Paqueta slid a superb pass through the Fiorentina defence.
The England man ran free, steadied himself, then beat Pietro Terracciano with a calm finish to thrill the Hammers fans – who were far greater in number than the 5,000 tickets they were allotted – and send manager David Moyes running down the touchline to celebrate the first major silverware of his career.
It mean captain Declan Rice, in probably his final game for the club, emulated club greats Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds by leading the club to glory. Moore captained West Ham to the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup and Bonds led them to the FA Cup in 1975 and 1980.
The victory also seals a place in next season’s Europa League and means European football for the third year running for the first time in the club’s history.
Jubilation for West Ham

The manner of victory could not have been any sweeter for West Ham.
Whilst Nayef Aguerd took time out to console Morocco team-mates Sofyan Amrabat at the final whistle, the celebrations of the Premier League team were something to behold.
From 18-year-old forward Divin Mubama, who played no part, to Moyes himself, finally a trophy-winner after such a long career in management, all joined in joy, leaping around trying to take it all in.
There will be an unwanted post-script as Uefa is bound to come down hard on the Hammers for the unwanted first-half scenes that left Biraghi playing with a bandage round his head for the last hour of the contest and forced the club to condemn those responsible.

However, that is for another day.
The reaction from the pitch and the stands at the final whistle give a lie to anyone who feels this tournament is beneath them and should give hope to Aston Villa, England’s entrants next season.
At the centre of it all was Rice. There was no thought of his future as he lapped up the adulation of the fans who have followed his journey from rising academy star to full England honours.
West Ham wouldn’t be denied

Some West Ham fans must have thought they had won it when Benrahma coolly drove home his spot-kick after the video assistant referee intervened to rule Biraghi had handled Bowen’s header.
But the loss of Kurt Zouma to injury just before Benrahma scored disrupted West Ham’s rhythm and after Nicolas Gonzalez had provided the knockback, Bonaventura’s excellent control and shot was too good for Alphonse Areola, preferred in goal to first-choice Lukasz Fabianski and maintaining his 100% appearance record in the competition.
Areola had been fortunate to escape conceding the opener in the final minute of the opening period when he failed to get down to a Christian Kouame header, which bounced off a post and fell kindly for Luka Jovic.
Areola should have kept out Jovic’s header, which was straight at him. Instead, he fumbled it over the line. The Frenchman was hugely relieved to see the offside flag raised, a decision confirmed by VAR. Jovic got an accidental boot in the face from Tomas Soucek instead and had to be replaced at the break.
The game didn’t really develop any momentum as too many players exaggerated non-existent fouls, which made it a tough evening for Spanish referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande, much as it was for Anthony Taylor in the Europa League final seven days earlier.
Grande did keep command of the contest, rightly booking Benrahma for diving at one point.
In the end though, all this was a footnote.
Bowen scored. West Ham got their trophy and Rice got to lift it.

Curtis Jones: Liverpool to appeal against midfielder’s red card in Tottenham defeat

Liverpool are to appeal against the red card given to Curtis Jones during their controversial 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Jones was sent off for fouling Yves Bissouma on 26 minutes after a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention.
Referee Simon Hooper initially gave Jones a yellow card for the challenge, but changed his decision after going to the pitchside monitor.
Midfielder Jones, 22, faces a three-game ban if the card is not overturned.
If the dismissal is upheld, he would miss Liverpool’s Premier League games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.
On Sunday, the Reds issued a statement after VAR failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal for offside, with the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium goalless.
The club said “sporting integrity has been undermined” after the governing body for referees PGMOL said the decision to rule out the goal was “a significant human error”.

Destiny Udogie: Tottenham condemn racist abuse towards defender

Tottenham have condemned racist abuse directed at defender Destiny Udogie on social media after Saturday’s 2-1 home win against Liverpool.
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was sent off for a second bookable offence when he fouled Udogie.
Tottenham said in a statement: “We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool.
“We stand with you Destiny.”
The club said that they would “work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify”.
Udogie joined Tottenham in August 2022 from Udinese and was loaned back to the Italian side for the 2022-23 season.
The 20-year-old has started all seven Premier League games under manager Ange Postecoglou this term, helping Tottenham to enjoy an unbeaten start.
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said it was “appalled” to see Udogie targeted.
Troy Townsend, head of player engagement at Kick It Out, said: “No amount of controversy or high emotion surrounding a game can ever warrant this abhorrent outburst.
“We are extremely concerned that players are being continually targeted on social media following games in the worst possible terms and it is vital that those responsible are held to account. High-profile players have been targeted almost every weekend since the season began in August.
“This worrying trend is a sad reminder of how much work remains to combat discrimination in football, and it is vital that social media companies help address this problem with the seriousness it requires.
“We have received several reports regarding the racist abuse targeting Udogie and have shared these reports with the relevant authorities.”
The officiating of Saturday’s match has drawn widespread criticism after VAR failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal for offside when the match was goalless.
Liverpool had two players sent off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Curtis Jones red-carded before Jota was punished for two challenges on Udogie.
A stoppage-time own goal from Joel Matip gave the hosts their victory.

Victor Osimhen: Mina Rzouki says it’s time Napoli gave back to the men who wrote their history

In an exclusive interview with Soccernet Nigeria this summer, Victor Osimhen noted his pride at choosing Napoli and winning with them.
“I have never seen a city that is more crazy with football than the Neapolitans are, and they show all their players love. Wherever I go, I am respected, and kids love me. A lot of people admire me, and a lot of people idolize me and put on a replica of my mask.
“I think it shows the hard work I have given them, and what I mean to them. And for me, there is no better place to be than in this place [Naples], and I am so happy I made the right choice by coming here and achieving this type of greatness with the Neapolitans. It is something I will wake up and always smile about.”
Just over the three months later and Osimhen, the finest striker Napoli have boasted in decades, has taken nearly every photo of himself in a Napoli jersey down from his Instagram account. Napoli only have themselves to blame.
By now the infamous TikToks from the Napoli official account have made headlines globally. They even led to the involvement of the Nigerian government such has been the incredulity and anger expressed over the social media team’s decision to upload the two videos. The clips prompted a range of reactions from accusations of disrespect to their own player to claims they were driven by racist undertones. The earlier one shows an image of the striker with the song “I am a coconut” while the second is of the player asking for and then missing a penalty with a sped up high-pitched voice saying ”gimme penalty please” dubbed over the top.
Italian media have noted that the club’s account on this particular social media platform has regularly poked fun at the club’s stars before and said that they are just trying to keep up with the current TikTok trends. A quick search of ‘I am a coconut’ shows that there are over 27.3m views of videos featuring the song.
Napoli released a statement in which they ‘explicitly state that the club never intended to offend or make fun of Victor Osimhen, who is an asset to the club’. An asset. They ended with: ‘If Victor was in any way offended, this was not at all in the club’s intentions.’
Hardly the apology we expected.

Throughout the storm, Osimhen has continued to score, against Udinese and then against Lecce on Saturday afternoon. Professional and determined, he always rises above any situation to provide for his team.
Aurelio de Laurentiis, the president of Napoli, travelled to the Lecce game with the team to mend the relationship with the striker and extend an olive branch, while the individual in charge of creating the TikTok personally apologised to the player.
On Sunday, Osimhen himself finally broke his silence when he uploaded a note on social media to confirm his love for the people of Napoli, who have suffered as they watched him distance himself from the club and insist that any accusations against them are untrue.
“The passion of the people of Naples fuels my fire to always play with my heart and soul, and the love for the badge is unwavering as I wear it with pride,” he said.
He also shut down any accusations against them. Osimhen has always maintained that while he has suffered racism in Italy, Naples was different, a city of brotherhood.
It must also be noted that fans of the club and the Napoli ownership have never seen eye to eye and there’s no love lost between them. The fans have never believed Aurelio de Laurentiis cares enough about the team or the city, while they have frequently vented their anger at a variety of issues from rising prices to security arrangements and restrictions imposed on what they are allowed to bring into the stadium.
From a purely business point of view, De Laurentiis has achieved more than most expected without overextending the club financially. However, his handling of important relationships is beginning to cause serious damage.
Luciano Spalletti, the famed coach who Osimhen described as a genius, wrote history when he won the Scudetto with the team. It was his crowning achievement as a coach and the city celebrated relentlessly. His reward? A notification that the club had activated the option to extend his contract by a year.
After winning the league title, there was an expectation that he would sit down with the president, discuss a new contract and be shown how much he was wanted by the club – not just given notice that he will be around for one year longer.
Spalletti was perhaps looking for the club to show faith in him and have a discussion about what he wanted, going forward.
He didn’t get that.
Despite Spalletti’s close bond with his squad and the fans, the 64-year-old decided he was too exhausted to continue at Napoli. Perhaps had he been celebrated in the manner he deserved, he would have stayed on to produce another season of wonder. He has instead accepted the role as manager of the Italian national team.
Napoli now risk losing Osimhen. His contract ends in June 2025 and despite negotiations to renew over the summer, nothing was ever signed. He may be an asset to the club, but he represents so much more to the fans and his team-mates.
“It was summer [2022] and after a fairly hard training session I was talking to [midfielder Frank] Anguissa,” recounted Osimhen to Corriere della Sera.
“I told him: ‘Frank, you know that our team is strong, we can really try to win the Scudetto no?’ He was sceptical but I convinced him. Spalletti approached us and asked what we were talking about. I tell him. He looks at me and says ‘if your team-mates are convinced, like you are, then we can try’.”
Osimhen was the first believer and Osimhen was the man who planted the seed that culminated in a season to remember for I Partenopei.
The title was a result of a group effort by Napoli. The brilliant scouting of talent, the excellent management of Spalletti, the wonder of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the defence of Kim Min-jae – but Osimhen was the extraordinary one. He was the top goalscorer, the psychological leader and chief cheerleader, constantly working to push the team forward.
The most common adjective used to describe Osimhen by the media is ‘generous’. Generous in his style of play, generous in his praise of team-mates, generous with his support. He pushed Napoli further than they even imagined to be possible.
He celebrated wildly on the sidelines when his replacement Giovanni Simeone scored the winner in the match against Roma, while he rushed to lift up Kvara’s chin when he missed a penalty against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, reminding him to keep his head held high.
Sadly, he wasn’t afforded the same love by his own club.
Osimhen’s celebrations of the goals he scored this week were muted, and now there’s a tricky match to contest against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
In Osimhen the fans trust and they will stand by him until the end, but he has made no secret of his desire to play for the biggest and the best one day. Has the club done enough to keep him? It’s time Napoli realise the importance of relationships and how to give back to the men who wrote their history.
