Fulham 5-3 Leicester City: Foxes remain in deep trouble after dismal first-half display

Spread the love

Forward James Maddison said Leicester City were “not hungry enough” after their Premier League survival hopes suffered a blow with a 5-3 defeat at Fulham.

Victories for fellow strugglers Everton and Nottingham Forest later on Monday saw the Foxes slip into the relegation zone, two points from safety with three games remaining.

“[I’m] hurting. This was a big game for us and we were not at it,” Maddison told BBC Match of the Day.

“We didn’t start the game well enough. We need to do the basics well.”

Fulham opened the scoring through a Willian free-kick before strikes from Carlos Vinicius and Tom Cairney powered them into a 3-0 half-time lead.

Cairney added another after the restart before Harvey Barnes pulled a goal back for the visitors, who then saw Jamie Vardy miss a penalty in the 66th minute.

Willian re-established Fulham’s four-goal lead with another fine strike before Maddison netted Leicester’s second with a spot-kick and Barnes scored a late third.

“We were not hungry enough to want to win the game,” said Maddison.

“It is tough. No easy game in the Premier League – it is a cliche but so true. We will keep fighting. We will keep trying to put it right.”

Maddison later sought to clarify his post-match comments on social media, saying: “When I say not hungry enough I mean aggressive and on the front foot in duels, not us wanting to win or realising the importance.

“We were not good enough today and we’ve only got ourselves to blame and apologise for that. But, as someone who sees the work we are doing every single day to try and put this right, it’s not down to attitude or application.”

Woeful Leicester booed off at half-time

Leicester are desperate for points and, with matches against Liverpool and Newcastle still to come, Foxes fans would have circled Fulham away as a must-win fixture in their battle to avoid the drop.

But against a side who had lost three of their previous four matches at home, they were woeful in the opening 45 minutes.

“The first half was nowhere near good enough,” Leicester boss Dean Smith told BBC Match of the Day. “We gave away goals we shouldn’t give away at this level.

“I didn’t see that coming. We have been fairly resolute in the five games we’ve had with the exception of Everton.”

The Foxes fell behind in the 10th minute when keeper Daniel Iversen misjudged Willian’s wide free-kick and the ball bounced underneath him before nestling in the bottom corner.

Vinicius’ goal finished off a fine counter-attacking move before Cairney scored on just his third league start of the season with an impressive curling finish.

Tom Cairney celebrates his goal against Leicester City
Tom Cairney scored his first Premier League goal since netting against Crystal Palace in October 2020

Trailing by three goals at the break, Leicester were booed off by the visiting fans and the mood only got bleaker when Cairney added Fulham’s fourth in the 51st minute.

However, Barnes gave his side a glimmer of hope, before Vardy was caught by Bernd Leno midway through the second half – but when the striker missed the resulting spot-kick, any thoughts of an unlikely comeback ended.

Fulham soon added a fifth against a porous defence, with Leicester having now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 20 games, an unwanted Premier League record.

There were ironic jeers when Maddison found the bottom corner from the spot in the 81st minute after he had been caught by Joao Palhinha in the box.

Barnes’ 89th-minute strike made the scoreline look more respectable, but in truth the Foxes never looked like securing anything from the match.

Superb Fulham equal club record

Inspired by their impressive first-half showing, Fulham have equalled a club record of 14 wins in a single Premier League season.

“We clearly deserved the three points and it should have been much more comfortable,” Fulham boss Marco Silva told BBC Match of the Day.

“Great team performance. Great moments of football, great goals. The way we played from the first minute was really good.”

There was a party atmosphere at a sun-kissed Craven Cottage as Silva’s side bounced back from narrow defeats by Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Cottagers completed a top-flight double over Leicester for the first time since 2004, thanks mainly to the excellent attacking work of Willian and Cairney.

Fulham remain 10th, two points behind west London rivals Brentford.

They need five points from their final three games to equal their record top-flight points tally of 53, from the 2008-09 season.

Fulham face Southampton away in their next match on Saturday before taking on Crystal Palace and Manchester United, while Leicester host Liverpool next Monday.

Savio: Manchester City sign Brazil winger from Troyes until 2029

Spread the love

Manchester City have signed Brazil winger Savinho from French side Troyes until 2029 in a deal worth 40m euros (£30.8m).

The 20-year-old starred on loan at Girona last season as they finished third in La Liga.

Both Girona and Troyes are part of the City Football Group.

Savinho said City are currently the “best team in the world” and that he is excited to work under manager Pep Guardiola, who he called “one of the greatest coaches ever”.

On why Manchester City is the right club for him, Savinho said: “[Because of] everything I’ve seen today. I just got here this morning and I turned to my agent and stepfather and said, ‘there was no way I was going to turn down Manchester City’.

“I’m a Brazilian who likes to play on the front foot, to be happy, to play joyful football.

“I like playing one against one, making assists, scoring goals too, and helping the team. My main characteristic, what I like the most, is being happy and getting fans up off their seats.”

Savinho, who is also known as Savio, started his career at Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro before joining Troyes in the summer of 2022.

He never played a competitive game for the Ligue 2 side, though, as he was sent on loan to PSV Eindhoven for the 2022-23 season.

After making just eight appearances for the Dutch giants, Savinho enjoyed success on loan at Girona last season, scoring 11 goals and making 10 assists in all competitions, and earned a first senior call-up for Brazil in March.

A debut against England followed and he scored his first international goal against Paraguay in the group stage of the Copa America.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “He has a big role to play for Manchester City this season and beyond.

“We are totally confident in his ability. He is still young and has the potential to become even better, and everyone knows that Pep is the best at helping players develop even further.

“But he has already shown his huge quality and technical ability and is an exciting addition to our attacking area.”

Europa Conference League: Linfield and Derry City suffer agonising defeats in Europe

Spread the love

After a disappointing first leg in Gibraltar last week, Derry began brightly and top- scorer Hoban met the returning Michael Duffy’s cross from the left but couldn’t keep his header down.

The hosts stayed on top without doing enough to test former Glentoran keeper Dayle Coleing in the Magpies’ goal and on 25 minutes they were nearly caught out against the run of play. Kevagn Ronco dug out a cross from the right that was glanced on by Javi Forjan and struck the outside of Brian Maher’s near post.

Hoban had the ball in the net on the half hour mark with a trademark header which he crashed in off the inside of the post, but Andorran official Antoine Chiaramonti ruled it out for an apparent foul on Ruben Diaz.

The Candystripes finally opened the scoring on 38 minutes when Connolly rose to meet Duffy’s corner and buried it into the bottom corner.

However, right on half-time City were reduced to 10 when O’Reilly, picked up a second yellow for a dive after going down in the box under a challenge from Jean-Carlos Garcia.

O’Reilly was adamant he was clipped but the referee disagreed and his dismissal meant Ruaidhri Higgins’ side would have to play the second half a man down.

Derry did not come out in the second half like a team reduced to 10 men as they immediately went on the attack. McMullan had an effort from a narrow angle saved less than a minute after the restart, while Hoban couldn’t apply the finish to his cutback.

The pressure paid off just before the hour mark from another corner when Hoban met Ben Doherty’s delivery. His initial header was blocked on the line by his team-mate Will Patching but the Derry number nine reacted fastest to bury the rebound.

Derry kept pushing but almost were caught out when Olatunde Bayode rounded Maher and his cross found Eduardo Salles, but the Brazilian blazed over from six yards. McMullan also missed a late chance to seal the comeback so extra-time was needed to separate the sides.

Out of nowhere in the 111th minute, Juanje’s 30-yard effort came crashing off the bar and De Haro was quicker than the home defence to react and buried the rebound past Brian Maher.

Patching had an overhead kick headed off the line but Derry were unable to find a leveller which would have taken the game to penalty kicks.

Savinho: The story of Man City’s new signing from Troyes

Spread the love

Girona manager Michel is not one to get carried away too easily.

He couldn’t resist the temptation, however, after watching Savinho train for the first time during pre-season last year, immediately calling sporting director Quique Carcel aside.

“We’re going to finish in the top eight,” he told Carcel, who tried, in vain, to bring him back down to earth. “Are you crazy or what?” As it would turn out, Michel could not have got it more right.

Such was Savinho’s impact at the Montilivi stadium that Michel’s prediction wasn’t bold enough – as Girona fought for the La Liga title until the very end. They finished in third place – behind only Real Madrid and Barcelona – and qualified for the Champions League. It was the best campaign in the club’s 93-year history.

Much of the credit for this was given to their electrifying winger.

In the space of a year, Savinho went from a player struggling in PSV Eindhoven reserves to a breakout star in Spain, making his Brazil debut against England at Wembley.

“I know this is a big statement, but I hadn’t seen anyone so effective in one-on-one situations since Vinicius Jr emerged,” Michel said.

“He was perhaps the most surprising talent in La Liga if you consider that [Jude] Bellingham was already known by everybody.”

It’s no wonder Manchester City have made Savinho their first signing of the summer, snapping him up from sister team Troyes, who had loaned him to Girona.

The 20-year-old has become the first player to climb all the way to the top of the City Football Group pyramid.

Having ended last season with 11 goals and 10 assists for Girona, he will be determined to prove that he’s here to stay. It should not be an issue for someone who, despite his age, has always stood out for his strong character and self-esteem.

“I was born with the gift of playing football,” he has said on multiple occasions.

City manager Pep Guardiola will now be hoping to make the most of it.

Kasper Schmeichel: Celtic sign Denmark goalkeeper on one-year deal

Spread the love

Celtic have signed Denmark captain Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year deal after the goalkeeper led his country to the last 16 of Euro 2024.

Schmeichel, 37, was a free agent after leaving Belgian club Anderlecht at the end of last season and replaces former Manchester City club-mate Joe Hart, who has retired.

The Dane has amassed 105 international caps and will join his new team-mates in the United States, where the Scottish champions are on tour.

“Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success,” he told the club website. Celtic is what football is all about.”

Schmeichel is best known for his 11-year stint with Leicester City, during which the club won an improbable Premier League crown in 2016.

He would later work with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at King Power Stadium, where the pair claimed the 2021 FA Cup and subsequent FA Community Shield.

“He (Rodgers) is a top manager and someone I can’t wait to work with again,” added the veteran goalkeeper. “I will be doing all I can to keep Celtic on top.”

Schmeichel began his career at Manchester City, and spent a season in the Scottish top flight 17 years ago when he was loaned to Falkirk, before brief spells at Notts County and Leeds.

After leaving Leicester, he played a season at Nice, and moved to Belgium in the summer of 2023.

He made 33 appearances for Anderlecht, keeping eight clean sheets.

The 18-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option for an additional 12 months.

Yoro, who made his Lille debut at the age of 16, had been linked with Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain, while Liverpool were also interested in him.

He played 32 times in the league last season and scored two goals as he helped Lille finish fourth.

“Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honour,” said Yoro.

“Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project, and showed a lot of care for me and my family.

“I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new team-mates. I cannot wait to get started.”

officiel : George Mikautadze signe pour Lyon

Spread the love
