That Indian spa retreat Soukya, about an hour east of Bangalore, is unique can be seen from a glance at the long list of celebrities who have passed through the gates, including Dame Emma Thompson, Sting, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and, this week, King Charles and Queen Camilla – their eighth visit.

During one previous trip, the royal couple stayed in the same suite as mine. Spacious and comfortable, with a shower in the peaceful garden, it’s not opulent in a five-star or even a regal way. Although it has a four-poster with floaty curtains, an enormous bathroom with a hydrotherapy bath and a large sitting room, it feels relatively simple, decorated with traditional Indian heavy-wood furniture.

But you don’t come to Soukya for the rooms – you’re here for the healing.

Within hours I’ve been seen by three doctors, starting with Dr Issac Mathai, who founded the retreat in 2002. Just by scrutinising me and taking my pulse, he concludes that I’m breathing at only 60 per cent capacity, that there’s a blockage in my liver, something is not quite right with my kidneys and I have some neurological issues. ‘Most people over 50 have symptoms of future problems,’ he says. ‘They can be reversed.’

The questions he asks all his guests are probing, stripping them back to bare emotions. Did you fear the dark when you were a child? Do you cry easily? How has grief affected you? What work stresses are you going through?

The prescribed solution for me is a detox and rejuvenation programme.

This involves a daily morning dose of shirodhara, a deliciously calming treatment where oil drips on to the forehead to release your emotions. It’s followed by an amazing ayurvedic massage with two therapists slathering you with oil, leaving you feeling like a chicken that has been buttered for the oven. Finally, warm poultices filled with herbs are applied to ease back and neck tension.

The products are made on site. Huge vats of oil are heated with herbs stored in a jar-filled room that resembles an old-fashioned apothecary. The herbs originate from the medicinal garden with its 130 varieties of plants, from red-berried serpentine to treat hypertension to leafy water hyssop to improve memory.

It’s well worth touring the garden with a doctor, stopping at the flowerbed in the form of a human body where plants designed to help a particular part of the body grow in the corresponding area.

There’s no gym (they discourage too much activity as it interferes with the treatments) but there is a pleasant trail to amble round, past sandalwood trees, grazing farm animals and through a bamboo grove.

Although a busy road runs by the site, this 30-acre organic estate instils an instant sense of calm, with lush tropical gardens, sheep grazing on the lawns and tinkling wind chimes. It’s easy to see why Dr Mathai says that ‘half of healing is being in nature’.

It’s sustainable too, with enough solar, wind and biogas energy produced to put a smile on King Charles’s face. Women work the organic vegetable patch, and whatever they pluck that day is turned into the tastiest of low-spice, low-oil, low-fat meals at the restaurant, where neither meat nor alcohol is served.

Guests are requested to eat mindfully – not socialising or discussing symptoms with those on other tables, nor using mobiles (a request blatantly ignored by one fellow visitor who chatted loudly on speakerphone during an entire lunch).

Scrumptious soup is served to those on a liquid detox; it doesn’t leave you hungry at all.

Of course, the detox does not just involve food: it starts in the colon (although the less said about this, the better).

And at the end of languorous afternoons involving acupuncture and reflexology, where pressure is applied to various parts of the foot that correspond to different body parts, guests head to the changing room for eye, mouth and nasal washes (pouring the contents of a small watering can into one nostril and, somewhat bizarrely, letting it trickle out of the other).

Then it’s on to the twice-daily yoga in the open-air thatched shala whose dark floor is supposed to absorb negativity.

TRAVEL FACTS

Jane Knight was a guest of Healing Holidays (healingholidays.com), which offers stays at Soukya from £1,829pp.

It’s not your average yoga, but much, much slower with lots of meditation, though it proves quite hard to clear the mind with a loudly whistling train passing every few minutes (this also happens at night – bring earplugs).

There is evening meditation too, held in a room beneath the chapel where we repeatedly roll our eyes to exercise them before gazing into the flame of a candle in a practice known as trataka.

And so the cosseting days slide into each other, starting with medical check-ups, perhaps a dip in the pool at some point, and ending with a homeopathic remedy and bed by 9pm.

Although there’s an excellent library, guests are advised not to read for more than two hours a day.

It’s hard not to love the place. Most people leave at least a little lighter in the body as well as a lot lighter in the soul.

It’s easy to see how, like King Charles and Camilla, you could get hooked on Soukya, bank balance permitting.

The good news is that Dr Mathai plans to open centres in Britain and Greece in the next few years.

Crowds hurl mud at Spanish king on visit to flood disaster town
Furious locals hurled mud and insults at Spain’s king, queen and prime minister on Sunday in a startling show of anger in the worst hit town in the flood disaster that has killed more than 210 people. More heavy rain fell on the Valencia region after King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez were forced to leave Paiporta where more than 70 people died in floods last Tuesday.

My doctor asked if I wanted to keep my IUD of 9 years to wear as jewelry – turns out this is a weird trend

My doctor asked if I wanted to keep my IUD of 9 years to wear as jewelry – turns out this is a weird trend
Spread the love

When getting my IUD birth control replaced in my doctor’s office, it wasn’t the pain that shocked – it was the question I was asked following the procedure.

‘Would you like to keep it?’ New York-based OB/GYN Dr Yuliya Boruch inquired as she held the device she just removed from my body up for me to see.

Assuming she was joking, I awkwardly replied ‘no’ (I had no desire to carry it home on the New York City subway) and studied her eyes waiting for her to crack a smile – but no, she was deadly serious.

Dr Boruch revealed an increasing number of her patients ask to take the T-shaped device – a long-term form of birth control inserted into the uterus – home where they fashion them into wearable pieces of jewelry.

‘Several of my patients have also framed them and put them on their walls at home,’ she added.

Dr Boruch told me she now asks all of her patients if they would like to keep their IUDs as she has noticed the emerging trend.

A quick Google search shows ‘IUD jewelry’ is indeed a thing to ‘celebrate femininity’ and ‘spread awareness about birth control.’

‘I’m clearly behind the times,’ I thought.

One of the top results that came up was a Reddit post titled ‘I made my old IUD into a necklace.’

In the post, the Redditor explains how she had an IUD for five years and had a great experience with it: ‘No major cramping, less weight and mood fluctuation than being on the pill, and a very sparse/almost nonexistent period.’

When she had it removed and replaced she asked her OB/GYN if she could keep it.

She continued: ‘I took [my IUD] home, soaked it in hot dish soap water and scrubbed it VERY well, then went to a friend’s house who taught me how to make resin jewelry.

‘Made this necklace to celebrate femininity, birth control access, and my own inner strength! I’m happy to share this piece to spread more birth control awareness.’

A photo of her IUD pendant shows the device encapsulated in resin, with small flowers and butterfly motifs surrounding it.

An IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control, with more than a 99 percent success rate at preventing pregnancy.

There are two types of IUDs – copper and hormonal. The first releases a small amount of copper into the uterus, which creates an inflammatory response that is toxic to sperm and eggs.

Many women reveal on social media how they have been creative with their old IUDs

Many women reveal on social media how they have been creative with their old IUDs

The latter releases a small amount of the hormone progestin, which thickens cervical mucus and makes it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. It may also stop an egg from being released from the ovaries.

According to the 2023 National Health Statistics Reports on contraceptive use – the latest year available – 20 percent of sexually active women between 15 and 49 years old reported ever using an IUD between the years of 2015 and 2019.

But there is no information on how many women save their IUDs.

Getting an IUD is a minor procedure during which a doctor inserts a speculum into the vagina and uses a small tube to pass the IUD through the cervical opening and into the uterus.

To remove the device, a doctor will pull on small strings attached to the bottom of the IUD through the vagina.

It is after this removal when people apparently request to take their IUD home with them.

Further into my search on TikTok, I found dozens of other women who had taken their IUDs home to make jewelry and décor.

Content creator @i.love.almondbutter shows how she made an earring with her old IUD, while @claraburke42069 turned hers into a necklace and asked her followers if it was appropriate to wear to work.

Kicking creativity up a gear, @adrienneog took her old IUD home in a medical specimen cup and turned it into an accessory for her car. She spray painted it gold, attached it to a chain and hung it from her rearview mirror.

Meanwhile, @camilleschim took her followers on a trip to a craft store to buy a shadow frame to make her IUD into a piece of wall art.

She filmed herself washing her IUD in the kitchen sink and then showed off her device in a frame surrounded by pink flowers.

‘We were besties these last five years,’ the TikToker wrote in the caption.

While commenters have deemed these repurposed IUDs ‘cute’ and ‘adorable,’ others call these projects ‘gross,’ weird’ and added: ‘ I hope you don’t wear it. Kinda weird.’

One Reddit user contemplated taking it home, but said her old IUD was ‘covered in uterine gunk.’

Dr Boruch told me the devices are completely safe to hold on to, but ‘they should be cleaned with soap, water and alcohol wipes, as after all, they have been sitting inside the uterus for a good number of years… in some cases a decade.’

The gynecologist added: ‘Surprisingly they come out fairly clean, but there are always a few drops of blood following the removal.

‘The out of pocked cost for an IUD is $1,200 to $1,500 depending on the brand if you don’t have insurance, so it certainly makes for an expensive piece of jewelry!’

No matter public opinion or doctor recommendations, I’m glad I turned the offer down.

RIP to my IUD – it was nice knowing you.

Kylian Mbappe has been identified as the biggest problem in Real Madrid’s current struggles by manager Carlo Ancelotti, according to reports.

The Frenchman was hailed as Madrid’s blockbuster summer signing after refusing to extend his stay at PSG and signing as a free agent with the reigning Champions League holders.

However, life in Spain’s capital has been far from plain sailing for the superstar striker who’s arrival has coincided with Madrid struggling to mount convincing defences of both their LaLiga and European triumphs.

Barcelona recently thrashed Madrid 4-0 in El Clasico to establish a nine-point lead over their rival with Mbappe frustrating Los Blancos fans with his finishing and tendency to stray offside during the match.

His preference to be deployed as a central striker has also forced Jude Bellingham into a deeper lying midfield role with the Englishman yet to score this season after a previous breakthrough campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti has previously stressed he wants to see more from Mbappe, but is now blaming the 25-year-old for his inability to help the team when out of possession, as reported by Relevo.

It is claimed Mbappe has been identified as the team’s biggest problem with his lack of effort in running showing the World Cup winner only ran 8km during Madrid’s embarrassing El Clasico defeat.

The star’s refusal to help his team-mates regain possession has caused an imbalance in Madrid’s set-up that is making them more open and susceptible to counter-attacks.

Mbappe’s current goal return of just eight goals in 14 matches across all competitions hasn’t been enough to convince club chiefs they have made the right decision in bringing the forward to Madrid.

Meanwhile, PSG are excelling without Mbappe, currently topping the Ligue 1 table and producing more collective team performances in the Frenchman’s absence who left amid sour circumstances.

Arsenal and Les Blues legend Thierry Henry recently praised the French giants for improving without Mbappe who was previously the central figure in the team.

‘They are a bit more stable, less counters. But they still lost Mbappe,’ Henry told CBS Sports.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is LEAVING the club – in a major blow to Mikel Arteta as he loses key ally who masterminded their transformation and signed Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice
Spread the love

Mikel Arteta is to lose a key ally at Arsenal with highly rated sporting director Edu set to leave the club.

The Brazilian, a former Arsenal midfielder, has been responsible for capturing key signings such as Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice and in leading Arsenal’s strong performance in recruitment and delivering key players to the club.

He is widely thought of as one of the leading sporting directors in world football for masterminding the change in Arsenal’s signing surge as well as supporting the offloading of troubled stars such as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who were considered to be part of a failed past.

Talks have been ongoing with the club’s hierarchy and while the reasons are currently unclear, it is his decision to go. More details are expected to emerge in the next 24 hours.

It is thought there may have been a reshuffle in responsibilities among the Arsenal hierarchy in key positions but it is ‘too simplistic’ to suggest there has been a power struggle, one source told Mail Sport.

Edu, regularly photographed by the club photographer alongside new signings and quoted in official club releases, has been the driving force behind a cultural change at the club since he took the role in 2019.

He was appointed because he ‘gets the club and what is needed.’

One former team mate said ‘there is a class about the guy’.

Then director of football Raul Sanileh said: ‘We’re very excited that Edu is joining the team. He has great experience and technical football knowledge and most importantly is a true Arsenal man. He understands the club and what we stand for to our millions of fans around the world.’

Edu, 46, has said in an interview that he is proud to have supported Arteta in ‘changing how people see our club and the vision people have of Arsenal compared to the past.’

A cultured Brazilian midfielder, he was signed by Arsene Wenger and played for the Invincibles with team-mates such as Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira and Martin Keown.

‘I want to win the best way possible,’ he added. ‘When we win the trophy, it is because we did it the right way. Ask every single Arsenal fan how they feel about that.’ He spoke after Arsenal lost out in the title race against Manchester City.

His departure will be felt among the Arsenal fan base who will await a club announcement about the reasons behind the decision with interest.

Arsenal play in Milan on Wednesday with Arteta due to speak on Tuesday when he will be asked about Edu’s departure and what this means to him personally.

Whether it’s a cheeky burger or a healthy Poké Bowl, it’s safe to say that Britons love a takeaway.

Now, Deliveroo has lifted the lid on our ordering habits.

The online food delivery company has unveiled the top 30 trending dishes on its UK platform this year.

The list includes some fairly predictable dishes, including pizzas, chicken wings, and cheeseburgers.

However, it also includes some rather unexpected items, including a whole cucumber, protein bars, and unpasteurised kimchi.

‘Customers are seizing every moment to explore new dishes and cuisines and dive into the latest food trends,’ Deliveroo said.

‘From chocolate bars to chicken wings and super salads, this year’s list features a mix of global takeaway favourites, trending dishes, and grocery essentials.

‘While familiar dishes and cuisines make a return, the 2024 list welcomes plenty of newcomers, including white wine, coffee, desserts, burritos, and a variety of sandwiches.’

This was closely followed by two salads in London – the SP Caesar from The Salad Project, and Seiz’a Caesar + Blackened Chicken from atis.

Deliveroo users in Glasgow were enamoured with the Pepperoni Pizza from Frank’s Pizza, which was fifth on the list.

Over in Birmingham, however, it was the Bananas from Sainsbury’s that really got users excited.

Belfast users enjoyed the Burrito Bowl from Boojum, while users in Brighton loved ordering Protein Bars from Morrisons.

In Manchester, it was the Burgerism Meal from Burgerism that topped the list, followed by the Haaland Schiacciata from the locally run Ad Maiora.

‘Its Italian sandwich, “Haaland Schiacciata,” is dedicated to a certain local footballer,’ Deliveroo explained.

‘It has a cult following of sandwich fans, including several professional Manchester football players, and boasts a 4.8-star Deliveroo rating and rave customer reviews exclaiming, “Believe the hype!”.

Those in Cambridge, meanwhile, opted from the Double pepperoni & spicy honey from Pizza Pilgrims.

The rest of the top 30 were in London.

Notable entries in the UK capital included Jerk Chicken and Chips from White Men Can’t Jerk, Build your own Poké Bowl from Poké Shack, Chicken Katsu Curry from Wagamama, and Chicken Ruby from Dishoom.

Meanwhile, a whole cucumber was bizarrely found to be one of the most popular items ordered in London.

‘There is a new favourite grocery essential in baskets, as Londoners can’t get enough of the sell-out vegetable, cucumber, with Waitrose’s whole cucumber clinching fourth place,’ Deliveroo added.
