Crawley Town 1-1 Stockport County: Klaidi Lolos earns draw for hosts

Published

on

Crawley v Stockport match action
Stockport have only won one of their past seven League Two games

Klaidi Lolos scored for the third successive game as Crawley clinched a home draw to deny promotion-chasing Stockport the chance to cut the gap on League Two leaders Mansfield to just two points.

Antoni Sarcevic headed the Hatters in front in the 61st minute but Lolos’ leveller seven minutes from time gave Crawley only their second home draw in nearly 11 months.

Stockport, with only two wins from their previous nine away league games, had an early escape when recalled defender Laurence Maguire put a free header wide from a cross by Kellan Gordon.

Maguire had earlier set up Harry Forster but his shot was blocked by Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe.

The visitors threatened when Callum Camps broke through and and his powerful shot struck the outside of the post.

Stockport were indebted to Hinchliffe shortly before the break when Jeremy Kelly played in Danilo Orsi and the keeper beat away his goalbound shot.

At the other end, Corey Addai came to Crawley’s rescue shortly after the interval by producing fine saves to deny Kyle Wootton and Isaac Olaofe.

But Stockport broke the deadlock just after the hour when Sarcevic struck with a free header at the far post from Todd Kane’s corner.

However, Crawley equalised seven minutes from time when Greece-born Lolos burst through and fired past Hinchliffe, meaning Stockport have won only one of their last seven games.

Football management for black former players is ‘all snakes and no ladders’

Published

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany and Wolves manager Nuno are the only two black Premier League managers
Burnley manager Vincent Kompany and Wolves manager Nuno are the only two black Premier League managers

Non-black players were 50% more likely to get into management than black players over a 30-year period, according to research commissioned by the Black Footballers Partnership (BFP).

The report by three academics looked at off-the-pitch careers of around 3,500 former footballers who played in the Premier League or Championship between 1990 and 2010.

It found that despite black players making up 25% of Uefa-issued coaching qualifications, in 2022 and 2023, they only accounted for 4% of all managerial roles.

Delroy Corinaldi, executive director of BFP, said: “A career in football management often looks like a game of Snakes and Ladders; but for black former players, it’s pretty much all snakes and no ladders”.

The BFP is an organisation of black present and former players.

The report summarised that black former players get fewer chances at management, get promoted more slowly, their progress stalls sooner and they get fired quicker than their non-black counterparts – none of which is related to performance.

It also made a number of points, including:

  • The average black player does not accumulate much more than half the managerial experience that all other former players do
  • A black manager is 41% more likely to be fired than a white manager – when factors such as performance are equal
  • Across all management roles, a black person is 17% more likely to be fired

Of the 3,500 players in the research, 73% of the black players played in the Premier League with an average 62 appearances per player, while 62% of the non-black players appeared in the top-flight, with an average of 49 appearances.

“The findings are unbelievably stark,” Corinaldi told the PA news agency.

“The footballers have become the lost generation off the pitch, having become the stars on it.”

The report was published shortly after it was confirmed the UK government will establish an independent football regulator when the Football Governance Bill is introduced in Parliament on Tuesday.

Former professionals including Les Ferdinand, Chris Ramsey, Michael Johnson, Ricky Hill, Paul Davis and Sol Campbell have joined Corinaldi’s calls to include diversity and inclusivity objectives in the Football Governance Bill.

They have also called for football stakeholders to work with BFP to understand the lived experiences of discrimination in the game and for black footballers to receive the support they need to progress through every tier of the game unhindered by prejudice and racial discrimination.

“The game must do better and the independent regulator offers an opportunity for that but if that independent regulator doesn’t address racial equity in the game based on the data we’re showing then it is a missed opportunity,” added Corinaldi.

“This report is an opportunity for the game to reset, to re-engage with the BFP so we can work towards sustainable solutions.”

Football Governance Bill: Legislation for independent football regulator to be introduced

Published

on

Fans protest the European Super League outside Stamford Bridge
Football fans protested outside stadiums following the announcement of the European Super League in April 2021

The UK government will establish an independent football regulator when the Football Governance Bill is introduced in Parliament on Tuesday.

The legislation will grant powers to a standalone body – independent of both government and football authorities – to oversee the UK’s national sport.

The government announced plans to appoint a regulator in February 2023, following a fan-led review in 2022.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it is “a historic moment for football fans”.

“It will make sure their voices are front and centre,” he added. “Football has long been one of our greatest sources of national pride.

“But for too long some clubs have been abused by unscrupulous owners who get away with financial mismanagement, which at worst can lead to complete collapse – as we saw in the upsetting cases of Bury and Macclesfield Town.”

The legislation follows a fan-led review, which said a regulator was necessary for the long-term financial stability of the men’s professional game after issues including financial mismanagement and plans for a breakaway European Super League.

Everton and Nottingham Forest have both been deducted points this season for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The regulator will have powers revolving around three core objectives: improving financial sustainability of clubs, ensuring financial resilience across the leagues and safeguarding English football’s heritage.

Rick Parry, chair of the English Football League (EFL), said: “If delivered on the right terms, this landmark legislation can help fix the game’s broken financial model by offering the independent input ultimately needed to help ensure that all clubs can survive and thrive in a fair and competitive environment.”

A Premier League statement read: “With our clubs, we have advocated for a proportionate regime that enables us to build on our position as the most widely watched league in the world.

“Mindful that the future growth of the Premier League is not guaranteed, we remain concerned about any unintended consequences of legislation that could weaken the competitiveness and appeal of English football.

“The Premier League remains fully committed to delivering its world-leading funding to the wider game, through £1.6bn distributed to all levels of football across the current three-year term.”

What powers will regulator have?

New club owners and directors will face stronger tests to help prevent the possibility of them putting clubs out of business, as was the case with Bury and Macclesfield, while a licensing system covering clubs from the National League up to the Premier League has been proposed.

As part of their licence, clubs will be required to consult their fans on key off-field decisions, such as club heritage and the club’s strategic direction.

“Football is nothing without its fans,” said Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer. “We are determined to put them back at the heart of the game and ensure clubs as vital community assets continue to thrive.

“The new regulator will set the game on a sustainable footing, strengthening clubs and the entire football pyramid for generations.”

The bill also includes new backstop powers around financial distributions between the Premier League and the EFL, so that if the two parties continue to fail to agree on a ‘new deal’, the regulator can ensure a settlement is reached.

The government has long warned the football authorities that an independent football regulator (IFR) would have such powers to intervene.

Former sports minister Tracey Crouch, who chaired the fan-led review, said: “Football fans can begin to breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that the next steps towards protecting the long-term sustainability of the pyramid have now been taken.”

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the Football Supporters’ Association, added: “The FSA warmly welcomes the tabling of the Football Governance Bill arising from the 2021 fan-led review, and particularly its central proposal to introduce statutory independent regulation of the game.

“The regulator must be given the power to impose a financial settlement in the interests of the sustainability of the game as a whole. It is far too important to be left to the squabbling between the vested interests of the richest club owners.”

However, campaign group Fair Game said “at first glance” it looks like the bill has “missed the target” and that they have “failed to get assurances that the regulator will have the power to intervene”.

Nottingham Forest points deduction: PSR rules have created ‘a real mess’, says ex-chief Paul Faulkner

Published

on

Profit and sustainability rules have “created chaos” and “damaged” the Premier League, says former Nottingham Forest chief executive Paul Faulkner.

An independent commission found Forest’s losses to 2022-23 breached the threshold of £61m by £34.5m.

Forest, who say they are “dismayed” by the ruling, are expected to appeal, with any decision needing to be finalised by May 24, five days after the end of the Premier League season.

Forest thanked the commission for speeding up the process and are ahead of schedule in terms of the end-of-season deadline.

Everton’s initial 10-point deduction for breaching PSR rules was reduced to six on appeal, but their second case is still to be heard.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest side are now one point adrift of Luton Town and the battle to avoid the drop could be settled off the pitch, much to Faulkner’s frustration.

“It’s not clear to anyone who follows football, fans and the clubs themselves and it ends up creating that chaos around it,” said Faulkner, who worked at the City Ground in 2014-15.

“Luton could invade the pitch, celebrate staying up, people have one of the greatest days of their lives and five days later get told ‘Sorry, you’re relegated’. It damages the competition.

“We might have to wait days after a season finishes. It’s like waiting for VAR. They have got themselves into a real mess, which is a shame.”

The commission completed the Forest process within the initial 12-week timeframe, which was designed to ensure the charge is dealt with swiftly and any punishment is applied within the existing season, while any appeal could possibly be wrapped up before the 24 May deadline.

The Premier League initially suggested Forest should be docked eight points, with a reduction to six after mitigation, and offered two possible calculations for this deduction.

Firstly, that Everton were ultimately docked three more points on top of the minimum three-point deduction for a £19.5m breach. Since Forest’s breach was 77% larger, multiply three by 1.77 to 5.31 – an additional five-point penalty.

Graphic showing the bottom six Premier League teams and how Nottingham Forest's six-point deduction has put them in the relegation zone below Luton
*Both Forest (4) and Everton (6) have now been deducted points this season – pending a Forest appeal and a further Everton case to be heard

Alternatively, given the appeal board may have penalised Everton one point for every £6.5m over the threshold, then using the same calculation for Forest would result in an extra five-point deduction.

Faulkner added: “Surely there has to be a better way – it cannot be so hard to understand and fathom. If there are breaches, here is the bracket for the points deduction. It feels unsatisfactory.”

Forest have signed 42 players since promotion in 2022, spending a reported £250m, as they looked to compete in the top flight after 23 years away.

They stayed up by four points in 2022-23, having signed 22 players that first summer – a British record for one transfer window.

While he was Aston Villa chief executive, Faulkner and the club voted against PSR and he feels it has moved away from why it was initially introduced.

He said: “We voted against the rules because we felt it would discourage future investment in clubs.

“If you have that money why shouldn’t you be able to do that, as opposed to being told you can’t after what’s happened in the two previous years?

“If Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis didn’t spend, the club wouldn’t have stayed up. Is what Forest did wrong?”

Forest issued a strong statement saying they were “extremely disappointed” with the decision and felt they had been penalised for trying to be competitive in the Premier League.

The club’s defence was centred around when they sold Brennan Johnson, having rejected bids from Atletico Madrid and Brentford, before the striker joined Tottenham on 1 September, after the accounting deadline.

Clubs agreed to bring forward the date to submit their accounts and top-flight sides also turned down the opportunity to have a fixed sanction process in 2020.

The Premier League handbook states PSR rules are designed to try to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of clubs and maintain the competitive nature of the league by preventing clubs from deriving an “unfair advantage” over rivals by “increasing revenues or reducing costs via arrangements with entities linked to a club’s ownership”.

Women’s Super League: Attendance record for a WSL season broken with 36 games left

Arsenal fans at Emirates Stadium
Arsenal hold the record for the four top attendances in the WSL

The Women’s Super League has set a new cumulative attendance record with six rounds of matches still to play.

A club-record 32,970 watched Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Friday, taking the total number of fans attending WSL games this season to 717,721.

That surpasses the previous record of 689,297 set across the whole of the 2022-23 campaign.

The new record has been achieved with 36 games still to be played.

Larger WSL crowds are becoming common with an increased number of games played at stadiums this season which are usually reserved for clubs’ men’s sides.

After the upcoming Women’s Football Weekend on 23-24 March during the men’s international break, every WSL side other than West Ham will have played at least one game at their main stadium this season.

Arsenal’s win over Manchester United in February set a new attendance record of 60,160 for a WSL game and the Gunners sold out Emirates Stadium in back-to-back matches.

David James: Former England goalkeeper scores winner in Sunday League game

Ex Portsmouth and England goalkeeper David James
David James won 53 caps for England

Ex-England goalkeeper David James came out of retirement at the age of 53 to score the winning goal for a title-chasing Sunday League side.

James, who made 572 Premier League appearances, played a one-off game for AFC Hutwoodexternal-link and scored a 25-yard free-kick to give them a 2-1 victory.

He pulled on his shorts as a gesture of goodwill after the Sunday league side filled a donation box with boots.

“I kept asking the manager to take me off,” James told BBC Radio Solent.

“Fortunately he didn’t as we got a free-kick which I smashed goal bound. It hit the post, then hit the goalkeeper and went in.”

The former Liverpool, Manchester City and Portsmouth stopper played the first half in goal and then in the outfield after the break in the City of Southampton Sunday FL Division One game against Madeinheath United.

He never scored in his professional career which spanned more than 25 years.

James is an ambassador for energy company Utilita’s Football Rebooted initiative and was only too happy to help when Hutwood asked on social media if he was interested in getting some game time.

The campaign aims to provide football boots for those who cannot afford them.

“The idea of the campaign is to keep boots in the community,” James added.

“We want people to have them that want to take part in football but maybe can’t afford them. The aim is for anyone to be able to play, not matter who you are.”

Dundee v Rangers: SPFL to investigate late postponement of live TV game

Published

on

Rangers manager Philippe Clement at Dens Park
Rangers manager Philippe Clement was unhappy at the state of the Dens Park pitch

Circumstances that led to Sunday’s Scottish Premiership game between Dundee and Rangers being postponed is to be the subject of an investigation by the league’s governing body.

Rangers were left “extremely disappointed and angered” by the call-off after a second pitch inspection.

Referee Don Robertson deemed a number of areas on the pitch to be unsafe.

Now the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) says it “will be investigating the circumstances”.

It is the fourth game to be called off at Dens Park this season following heavy rainfall.

However, this one comes four matches before the top flight splits into two sections for the remaining round of fixtures, which means a new date will have to be hastily arranged before then.

“The postponement of any match is disappointing given the impact it has on supporters,” the SPFL said.

“This was particularly disappointing given the fact it was a live Sky Sports match and the proximity of the match to the split.”

The surface was deemed unplayable for a noon start following the second pitch inspection at 10:15 GMT, with Robertson pointing out that “the ball wasn’t rolling” in certain areas.

Dundee chief executive John Nelms thought his club had done all it could to get the pitch ready considering they experienced twice as much overnight rain as expected.

“If we had a three o’clock match, the pitch would probably be playable,” he insisted, adding that a request for a delayed kick-off had been denied.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement complained that he only found out of the postponement via the club’s kit man, who had arrived early at Dens Park.

The Belgian’s side were denied the opportunity to overtake reigning champions Celtic and return to the top of the Premiership.
