Published

on

Published

on

Liverpool manager search: Feyenoord’s Arne Slot set for talks to succeed Jurgen Klopp

Published

on

Liverpool are set to open talks with Feyenoord on Wednesday over manager Arne Slot as they search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Klopp announced in January he would leave Anfield at the end of the season and the Reds have been conducting extensive research around a number of candidates.

Slot, who led Feyenoord to the 2022-23 Eredivisie title, has emerged as a candidate who fits Liverpool’s criteria.

Feyenoord have won the Dutch Cup this season and are second in the Eredivisie.

Slot was linked with Leeds United after they sacked manager Jesse Marsch in February 2023.

He then ruled himself out of contention for the Tottenham Hotspur job last summer before Ange Postecoglou took over.

The 45-year-old then extended his contract with Feyenoord until 2026.

At the time he was being linked with Spurs, Slot said: “The next step will not be another club in Holland. If that is the next step, I’ve failed completely in the upcoming few years.

“A normal next step would be to go abroad and I’ve always said that the best league in the world is the Premier League.”

The attacking style of Slot, who is also thought to be interesting Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and his ability to develop players are believed to appeal to Liverpool.

He became Feyenoord head coach in December 2020 after leaving AZ Alkmaar, where he enjoyed success in his first managerial position.

The former midfielder spent his entire playing career in the Netherlands, making more than 100 appearances for both FC Zwolle and NAC Breda.

Xabi Alonso was linked with the Anfield job but the former Reds midfielder announced in March he would stay on at Bayer Leverkusen, who have since become German champions.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is another manager heavily linked with the Liverpool job.

Published

on

Published

on

Brian Clough: Mark Crossley on his former Nottingham Forest boss

Published

on

Clough was renowned for spending little time with the players during the week, but delivering simple and clear messages to them the day of games.

“We only saw him on a match day and it was very brief. He never coached. It was 4-4-2 back then and he used to make it as simple as possible.

“‘So goalkeeper, what’s your job?’ he’d say. ‘Stop the ball from going in the goal. That’s what I pay you £200 a week for’.”

Crossley continues.

“‘Full-back – stop crosses and when you get the ball back, play forward, preferably to a red shirt’.

“‘Centre-backs, head and kick it as far away from my goal as possible. You think you can play, but you can’t’.

“‘Wingers, beat your full-backs, cross the ball into an area where my centre-forward can score a goal. Centre-midfield players – three touches maximum, play forward, score me five goals a season and be good in both boxes’.

“Centre-forward, your job is to get hold of the ball and keep it and when you’ve got it, pass it to someone that can play football.”

Not everyone got the message, though. And the legend of David Currie lives clearly in Crossley’s mind after all these years.

“I think it was QPR at home and the ball got played into David Currie, who we’d signed from Barnsley, but he lost it on the halfway line. They went down the other end and scored.

“As I’ve thrown the ball back to the halfway line, I can see the gaffer on the halfway line with the number 10 aloft, which was David Curry’s number. ‘Off, off. We don’t flick the ball at this club son’, he was saying to him!”

There is more from the Currie files, though…

“David was from Barnsley like me, so we shared lifts. The next day at training, he parked in the gaffer’s spot. I didn’t say anything,” recalls Crossley.

“The gaffer asks whose car is in his spot and Currie puts his hand up. The gaffer goes to him, ‘have you bought an house in the Nottingham area yet?’

“He said, ‘no boss, I haven’t, but I’m looking’.

“Cloughie said, ‘let me stop you there son. Don’t bother’. And that was more or less the end of David Currie.”

Currie was sold to Oldham after eight games.

Scottish clubs in Europe next season – what do we now know?

Published

on

In terms of qualification via the Premiership, nothing yet.

Just like last term, the league winners will bypass the qualifiers and go straight into the big time. Meanwhile, the runners-up will again have to navigate a third-round qualifier and play-off round.

That’s set to eventually change, though, after Scotland dropped out of Uefa’s top-10 coefficient rankings, meaning next season’s Premiership winners will not get a free pass straight into Champions League.

Another thing that’s set to change, and quite drastically, is the competition’s format.

From next term, 36 teams will feature in a single league and each club will play eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away.

The top eight sides in the league will progress automatically to the last 16, while those in ninth through to 24th go into play-offs for a spot in the knockout stages.

Those 25th and below are out and will now not have the safety net of the Europa League, which will also have a similar format change along with the Conference League.

Liverpool v Everton: Best moments from previous Merseyside derbies

Jurgen Klopp and Sean Dyche
Will Jurgen Klopp or Sean Dyche be celebrating on Saturday?

The 244th Merseyside derby takes place on Wednesday with Everton hosting Liverpool at Goodison Park.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds start second in the Premier League, while Sean Dyche’s Toffees are 16th.

Liverpool have had the better of the recent meetings and have only lost one of the past 26 league encounters.

BBC Sport has taken a look back at some of the best moments in 21st century matches between the two famous clubs.

1 December, 2021 – Everton 1-4 Liverpool

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool
Mohamed Salah ended the 2021-22 season as the joint top scorer in the Premier League with 23 goals

A tough day for Everton and manager Rafael Benitez as Mohamed Salah scored twice to help Liverpool cruise to an easy win against their former boss, with home fans protesting during and after the match.

This proved to be Benitez’s only Merseyside derby in charge of Everton with him sacked the following month.

20 February, 2021 – Liverpool 0-2 Everton

Everton players celebrate a goal
Everton had not won at Anfield in 24 consecutive visits before this win

Everton won at Anfield for the first time since 1999 with this victory in a match played behind-closed-doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Richarlison scored after three minutes with Gylfi Sigurdsson adding a second through an 83rd-minute penalty.

4 December, 2019 – Liverpool 5-2 Everton

Georginio Wijnaldum celebrates for Liverpool
This was the highest-scoring Merseyside derby since February 1991

An incredible first half saw six goals – two for Liverpool’s Divock Origi as well as one apiece for Xherdan Shaqiri and Sadio Mane, while Michael Keane and Richarlison netted for Everton.

Georginio Wijnaldum added a fifth for Liverpool in the 90th minute with the Toffees sacking boss Marco Silva two days later.

2 December, 2018 – Liverpool 1-0 Everton

Divock Origi and Jurgen Klopp embrace
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was later fined £8,000 by the Football Association for running on to the pitch to celebrate Divock Origi’s late winning goal

One of the most dramatic endings to a Merseyside derby as Divock Origi took advantage of an error from Jordan Pickford to score a 96th-minute winner at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp then raced from his technical area into the centre circle to celebrate with goalkeeper Alisson, amid hectic scenes of jubilation.

19 December, 2016 – Everton 0-1 Liverpool

Sadio Mane celebrates scoring for Liverpool
Sadio Mane scored the winner in Jurgen Klopp’s first away Merseyside derby. Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool in 17 derby matches, winning 10, drawing six and losing one

Another late decisive goal, again for Liverpool to win it.

Sadio Mane scored in the 94th minute after Daniel Sturridge’s shot had bounced off the foot of the post as the Reds won at Goodison Park in dramatic fashion.

23 November, 2013 – Everton 3-3 Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge celebrates scoring for Liverpool
Daniel Sturridge came on in the 79th minute and equalised 10 minutes later

More late drama in this epic derby. Philippe Coutinho put Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool ahead early on, but Kevin Mirallas quickly equalised for Roberto Martinez’s Everton.

Luis Suarez restored Liverpool’s advantage before two goals from Romelu Lukaku gave Everton a late lead. However, they could not hold on as Sturridge scored in the last minute to ensure a point apiece in a six-goal thriller.

28 October, 2012 – Everton 2-2 Liverpool

Steven Naismith scores for Everton
All the goals came in the first 35 minutes with Steven Naismith completing Everton’s recovery from 2-0 down

Liverpool raced into a two-goal lead at Goodison Park thanks to a Leighton Baines own goal and one for Luis Suarez. He celebrated with a dive in front of Toffees boss David Moyes, who before the game had said the Uruguayan fell to ground too easily.

Everton fought back with goals from Leon Osman and Steven Naismith and it ended 2-2, despite Suarez, controversially and incorrectly, having what would have been a late winner ruled out for offside.

17 October, 2010 – Everton 2-0 Liverpool

Former Everton striker Tim Cahill
Tim Cahill opened the scoring in the 34th minute before Mikel Arteta added a second early in the second half

This was the first match since John W Henry and Tom Werner bought Liverpool, but it was the Toffees fans left celebrating.

Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta scored the goals that left the Reds in the rare position of being in the relegation zone with only six points from eight games and only goal difference keeping them off the bottom of the table.

9 September, 2006 – Everton 3-0 Liverpool

Former Everton striker Andy Johnson
This was Everton’s biggest win over Liverpool since 1964 – and they have not won by a three-goal margin in the Merseyside derby since this match

What a day for Everton fans.

The Toffees secured their biggest win over their city rivals in more than 40 years thanks to a goal from Tim Cahill and two from Andrew Johnson.

16 April, 2001 – Everton 2-3 Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister celebrates
This fiery match saw 12 bookings before Gary McAllister won it late on

A five-goal thriller at Goodison Park with late drama.

Emile Heskey gave Liverpool an early lead before Duncan Ferguson equalised. Markus Babbel restored the Reds advantage, Robbie Fowler missed a penalty that would have made it 3-1 before Igor Biscan was sent off for the visitors.

David Unsworth converted an 83rd-minute spot-kick to make it 2-2, but Liverpool won it in the last minute with Gary McAllister’s superb free-kick.

And one for the older fans…

20 February, 1991 – Everton 4-4 Liverpool (FA Cup, fifth round replay)

We know this did not take place in the 21st Century but it was just too good to be left out.

Everton came from behind four times in this pulsating 4-4 draw after extra time with Liverpool in the 1991 FA Cup fifth round, in what was to be Kenny Dalglish’s final match as manager in his first term with the Reds.

This was the last season of multiple replays in the FA Cup, with Everton winning the second replay 1-0.
