Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley: Callum Hudson-Odoi stunner on his debut earns home side a draw

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a glorious equaliser on his Nottingham Forest debut to earn a Premier League draw against Burnley.

The Clarets looked to be controlling the game but deadline day signing Hudson-Odoi had other ideas, curling a stunning strike into the top corner on the hour mark.

Burnley had taken a first-half lead through Zeki Amdouni’s well-taken shot into the bottom corner after fine work by the lively teenager Luca Koleosho.

Swiss striker Amdouni, who scored the winner here in the Carabao Cup just 20 days ago, had already given goalkeeper Matt Turner a warning sign with a stinging drive from range before netting a cool finish.

Vincent Kompany’s visitors thought they had grabbed the winner 12 minutes from time when Lyle Foster stroked in from close range, but it was ruled out for a handball by Sander Berge in the build-up.

Burnley’s night then ended on a sour note when top scorer Foster was sent off for violent conduct in injury time, after a needless off-the-ball elbow on Ryan Yates.

Following three straight defeats, the result allows Burnley to get off the mark this season, while Forest have made a decent start to the campaign with seven points from five games.

A point apiece a fair result

These two sides met at the City Ground for the second time in three weeks and it seemed like a repeat result was on the cards.

Burnley’s club record signing Amdouni converted a 90th-minute winner to send his side through to the EFL Cup third round at the expense of Forest last month.

And he netted again on Monday night with a drilled effort from the edge of the box after being set up by Italy youth international Koleosho, who outpaced home skipper Joe Worrall close to the byeline.

Koleosho impressed, giving Argentine World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel the runaround throughout the game before being replaced by Belgium international Mike Tresor.

This was a solid showing from Kompany’s men in their first away game of the campaign after conceding three or more goals in all their matches so far.

A club-record five consecutive Premier League defeats was avoided but their return to the top-flight has been a struggle after cantering to the Championship title last season.

Forest, though, hit back in the second period through Hudson-Odoi’s brilliant finish with the side highlighting their prowess in front of goal by scoring in their 12th straight top-flight game.

The equaliser came from Taiwo Awoniyi’s knockdown and the Nigeria striker is becoming an integral part of a Forest side that keeps changing personnel, now contributing a goal or assist in his last nine league games.

The two sides face Manchester clubs on Saturday – Forest travelling to Treble winners and league leaders Manchester City (kick-off 15:00 BST), while Burnley host United on the same day (20:00).

Euro 2024: Alan Shearer & David Moyes on Scotland’s exit

Published

on

Spread the love

Across the three matches, Scotland had just 17 shots.

Since the Euros group stage was introduced in 1980, that’s the joint fewest by a nation – matching Northern Ireland’s total in 2016.

Their combined expected goals (xG) across the finals was 0.91. Miserable, miserable stuff.

Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer, pinpointed the Scots’ injury woes and a limited pool of attacking players.

“I don’t think it was for a lack of effort,” he added on BBC One.

Those points were echoed by former West Ham manager David Moyes, watching alongside Shearer and Scotland captain Rachel Corsie in the studio in Berlin.

But that will struggle to stick with a deflated Tartan Army who watched their side score 17 goals across eight qualifiers to reach Germany.

“We were thrilled when we qualified,” Moyes said. “Steve [Clarke] did a good job getting us here and he took us to the last couple of minutes [against Hungary].

“There’s no shame in it. But we don’t have top, top players to make a difference.”

Euro 2024: Albania’s Mirlind Daku given two-game ban for offensive chants

Albania forward Mirlind Daku has been banned for two matches after leading his country’s fans in derogatory chants.

Daku addressed his country’s supporters with a megaphone following Albania’s heated 2-2 draw with Croatia in Hamburg.

Uefa also fined the Albania Football Association €25,000 (£21,250) for “transmitting provocative messages not fit for a sports event”.

The Albania FA were charged an additional €22,500 (£19,000) for pitch invasions and the lighting of fireworks by supporters.

The Croatian Federation were fined €28,000 (£23,600) for the throwing and lighting of fireworks.

Uefa added its investigation into “potential racist and/or discriminatory conducts by supporters in this match is ongoing”.

Doku took to social media to apologise on Friday.

Serbia had threatened to pull out of Euro 2024 over chanting between Croatia and Albania fans.

The Serbian team played their match with Denmark a few hours later, drawing 1-1.

Daku’s actions also resulted in the North Macedonia’s football federation demanding an apology.

Euro 2024: Harry Kane says pundits must remember tournaments are ‘tough’

Kane, who scored England’s goal against Denmark, was substituted when it was 1-1 and his fitness levels have also been questioned.

Manager Gareth Southgate also said the team aren’t in the physical condition to “press” the opponent how they would like.

“If I’m honest with myself … have I played the best that I know I can? No. But I didn’t score in the group stage at the World Cup, I didn’t score in the group stage at the Euros,” said Kane, England’s record goalscorer.

“So from my point of view, it’s a bonus to be one goal ahead. I’d always judge myself first and I know I can play better and I know a lot of players in the team think the same – that we can all play a little bit better.

“I don’t panic. I don’t get too high or too low. I’ll keep doing what I do and just go onto the next one.”

In the above, WB, WC, WE and WF stands for the winners of Groups B, C, E and F, who are the teams that will play the qualifying third-placed sides.

Who plays who is pre-determined, so the final rankings of the table of the best third-placed teams is irrelevant.

As mentioned earlier, those currently going through, in alphabetical order, are third-placed sides from Groups B, C, D and E.

That would lead to these last-16 ties:

WB v 3E

WC v 3D

WE v 3B

WF v 3C
