Steve Bruce: Blackpool boss on management, criticism and rollercoasters

Veteran boss Steve Bruce is relishing his return to the game with Blackpool.

The 63-year-old had been out of work for almost two years before taking over at the League One club in September.

Bruce, in his 13th managerial appointment in a career that started in 1998, spoke to Mark Clemmit for BBC One’s Football Focus after four wins and a draw from his first five games as Seasiders boss.

“When I was out for nearly two years, at the end of the day I wanted and needed to do something,” he said.

“I had to have something to get me out of bed in the morning and this opportunity came along and I thought ‘why not?'”

He added: “I’ve been to South Africa and done a safari and been to places I never thought I’d go but I wasn’t just ready to pack up.

“I think you know when the time is right and for me it was ‘let’s go and do a couple more years and see where we are’.”

“I still think I’ve got something to offer and as long as you maintain the enthusiasm that you’ve got… if that goes away, I’ll know it’s time.”

Bruce was sacked as West Bromwich Albion boss in October 2022 after an unhappy nine months at The Hawthorns.

That followed a difficult two years in charge of hometown club Newcastle.

In his whole managerial career he had never previously been out of work for more than six months and admitted he needed to take a longer break before returning.

“I wanted to make sure that I took at least 12 months off,” he said.

“I think all my family know that I was wanting to go back to work and good for them that they never tried to stop me either and I’m grateful for that.

“It’s just being involved in football – the winning on a Saturday or even the disappointment like we had on Tuesday of conceding a last minute equaliser.”

Dundee United: Jim Goodwin extends terms at Tannadice
Spread the love

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has signed a contract extension at Tannadice, taking him to the summer of 2026.

The 42-year-old steered the club back to the top flight as Championship winners and they sit fourth after collecting 16 points from their first 11 matches.

“It was an easy decision,” said the former St Mirren and Aberdeen boss, who took the job in March 2023, initially on a short-term arrangement.

“The club’s long-term vision aligns perfectly with my own ambitions as a manager.

“Last year was an incredibly special one, and I’m immensely proud to have played a part in helping Dundee United reclaim their rightful place among the top clubs in Scotland.”

Goodwin signed 13 new players for the Premiership campaign and the squad has made a promising start to the campaign, losing just three league matches.

“It is important for our focus always to remain on the future and making improvements across the board, on a daily, monthly and yearly basis,” he continued.

“We are trying to cultivate and maintain a culture conducive to prolonged success, and for this to be achieved, our talented group of players and hard-working staff must continue to buy into what is being asked of them.

“An exciting challenge lies ahead of me, both for the remainder of the season and beyond, and I am eager to embrace it with continued support from my backroom team and the board.”

Celtic: Leipzig win forgotten already as Kasper Schmeichel stays in moment

Kasper Schmeichel has stressed the importance of staying “focused on the here and the now” as he relishes the physical and mental demands of Celtic’s busy schedule.

The goalkeeper enjoyed his 38th birthday on Tuesday, making a couple of big saves in a 3-1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig that came just a few days after a thumping 6-0 win against Aberdeen in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

A Premiership visit to Kilmarnock on Sunday is next and the Denmark international insists that is all he is concerned with.

“It’s about staying grounded now and not getting too carried away,” he said.

“Tuesday’s gone. We’re not thinking of that any more. That was a fantastic night for all of us, but we park that and we move on to the next one.

“Now it’s away to Kilmarnock and all the challenges it brings, with the pitch and everything else.

“In modern football, you have to be on your game in every single game. There are no easy games.

“That’s the beauty and the challenge of playing at a club like Celtic. You have to be able to adapt to all the different competitions you’re in.”

Monk, however said that in derby games, recent form can count for very little.

“Derby games in general, I’ve managed quite a few and played in quite a few, they’re all different, quite individual games,” he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

“As much as your preparation is the same for every game, there’s no denying that a derby game has a different feeling around it. It’s a derby I haven’t been involved in and a few of the boys in the changing room (haven’t), so we go there looking forward to it and trying to put our best on the pitch.”

He continued: “Each and every game, there’s little tactical nuances you have to adapt to, each team is different.

“The principles, the effort we’ve been putting into our work, the intensity and focus, all the things that go with that, they don’t change – but there are little nuances which you have to be ready for.”

Cambridge suffered a blow with midfielder Paul Digby ruled out for “six to 10 weeks” because of a muscle strain but striker Ryan Loft and Shayne Lavery are both nearing a return to action.

However, Monk acknowledged Peterborough would start as favourites because of the attacking threat they pose.

Posh have only won two of their last five in the league, but have beaten Stevenage and Crystal Palace’s under-21 side in the EFL Trophy, either side of a gutsy 4-2 win at Newport County in the first round of the FA Cup.

“They spend a lot on talented players but obviously with the model of selling them for a profit and they’ve done exceptionally well at that over the years,” Monk added.

“We know their attacking threat is huge for this level.”

Steph Houghton on fighting for better pay: ‘I was on £9,000 a year’

Steph Houghton on fighting for better pay: ‘I was on £9,000 a year’
Spread the love

“It was never about the money when I joined Arsenal,” says Steph Houghton. “Now I look back at those figures and I think ‘oh my god’.”

In 2012, Houghton was one of the best female centre-backs in England – for which she was paid £4,000 a year by Arsenal, the most successful women’s team in the country at that time.

Bonuses and extra work as a part‑time coach and club ambassador lifted that figure to £9,000.

“I was living in London, although I was fortunate that the club paid for the apartment,” Houghton, who won 121 caps for England and captained her country from 2014 to 2021, told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

“At the same time, to live off that and try and save for a house, simple things we all do as human beings, it was quite tough to do.”

Houghton, who retired from playing at the end of last season, is credited with helping to change the course of professional football for women.

In her autobiography Leading From The Back, the three-time Women’s Super League winner details the struggles she endured as she fought for better pay.

Today, some of the very best players in the WSL are reported to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds, external a year.

It was a different story 12 years ago.

“I came from the north-east. My mum and dad did not have much money and I’m from a working class family,” Houghton told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Friday.

“I came from a pit village [South Hetton], so for me money was never really a driving factor.

“But I had the opportunity to move to Arsenal. I wanted to go there and win trophies, I wanted to establish myself in the England set-up and play with the best players.”

Houghton, who joined Arsenal in 2010, became increasingly determined to stand up for herself.

“To be going in there by myself to speak about something was tough because the guy that I was speaking to, Vic Akers, who is an absolute legend in the women’s game, to have that conversation with someone who has brought you to the club was tough,” she adds.

“It was scary and it was daunting. I would have been only 22, 23 then, so quite young in terms of not that much experience.

“But I had to stand up for myself.”

Houghton went on to become the first female player to appear on the cover of Shoot magazine, was made an MBE and received the Freedom of the City in Sunderland.

She also led England during a significant period of growth for women’s football, managing increased scrutiny, expectation and media attention, as well as guiding the next generation.

Spread the love

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood has become the first player in the club’s history to be named Premier League player of the month.

The New Zealand captain won the award after scoring four times in three appearances during October.

Wood’s goals helped Forest to remain unbeaten throughout the month, as Nuno Espirito Santo won the manager of the month prize.

Forest started the month with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, when they were reduced to 10 men.

Wood – the first player from New Zealand to be the Premier League’s player of the month – scored a fortnight later when Forest beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at home, then struck twice in a 3-1 win at Leicester City.

The Kiwi joined Forest from Newcastle United in 2023, initially on loan.

Luke Shaw: Manchester United defender back in training after three months out
Spread the love

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has returned to training following three months out with injury.

The England left-back, who hasn’t played for the club since February, sustained a calf injury in early August.

He had been expected to return after the international break in October but former manager Erik ten Hag said Shaw had suffered a “setback”.

Shaw suffered a hamstring injury in February that ruled him out of the remainder of the last Premier League season.

However, he was selected in England’s squad for Euro 2024 and started the final defeat by Spain after missing the group phase.

Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy said earlier this week that fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia, who hasn’t played for the club since April 2023 following a knee injury, was closer to returning to action than Shaw.

Everton women: Bottom of the WSL and without a win – what’s going on?
Spread the love

The extent of the women’s team’s financial situation was most apparent during the summer.

Sorensen said they turned down a pre-season trip to Australia, not because of finances but logistics. However, he admitted it was “a gamble we can’t afford”.

Everton had to sell highly-rated Sweden midfielder Hanna Bennison to Juventus in order to bring in much-needed funds.

They missed out on players in the Japanese market – who Sorensen said he had scouted years previously – because top clubs offered higher salaries.

Stringent rules on non-EU players coming to the WSL can also be a barrier for clubs like Everton. Foreign players have to meet certain requirements to be eligible to play in England and that limits the talent pool – something West Ham have also endured.

Sevilla duo Inma Gabarro and Toni Payne were among Everton’s highest-profile signings, while existing WSL-based players Honoka Hayashi, Melissa Lawley and Veatriki Sarri were seen as ‘low-risk’ options who did not need time to adapt.

Sorensen said during the summer transfer window the club “can’t just go out and spend a lot of money so we have to be super-smart”.

In reality, the budget for the women’s team has not decreased since 2021 – when former manager Willie Kirk targeted a top-three finish.

However, the market has become more expensive since then. Transfer fees are now common, while player salaries have increased.

Everton Women’s chief executive officer Alan McTavish, director of football Kevin Thelwell and Sorensen are already working on recruitment for January – but fans are growing impatient and want the lack of squad depth addressing.

“Immediate investment in recruitment is essential. We have such a ridiculously unbalanced squad,” said supporter MacFarlane.

“The pressure on these players is huge, especially on some of the younger players, having to play out of position all over the pitch – this simply is not good enough.”

MacFarlane also calls for future development of the club’s Walton Hall Park stadium, which he says will help “grow the fanbase and attract new supporters”.
