Ben Mee: Brentford defender ruled out for rest of season with ankle injury

Ben Mee suffered the injury blow during Brentford’s defeat to West Ham on Monday

Brentford defender Ben Mee has been ruled out of the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.

The 34-year-old was assessed by the club’s medical staff this week and manager Thomas Frank said his worst fears over the injury were confirmed.

“He got a fracture to his ankle in the contact at West Ham. That is our entire back four out,” Frank said.

“We have a good squad, we have good players, but that makes it a little bit more tough.”

Brentford are already without a number of key players which has left Frank with a depleted squad for Saturday’s visit of Chelsea.

Defenders Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey and Ethan Pinnock are all out injured along with midfielder Joshua Dasilva plus forwards Kevin Schade and Bryan Mbeumo

Frank added: “I’ve got potentially seven starters out. That’s life and it’s up to me and the players to find a way out.

“We were in a 12-game unbeaten run and everyone thought ‘wow, Brentford are so good.’ It’s still the same staff, owner and players.

“Why is it now that we lost 10 of the last 12? Sometimes not good performances, sometimes things go against us and also injuries.

“I’m very optimistic. I’m a massive fighter and my players are massive fighters. When things are going against you, there’s only one thing to do and that’s pull together.”

Eric Dier: England defender triggers one-year contract option with Bayern Munich

Eric Dier in action for Bayern Munich
Eric Dier began his professional career with Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon

England defender Eric Dier has triggered an option to make his move to Bayern Munich permanent this summer to signal the end of his Tottenham career.

Dier, 30, joined Bayern on loan until the end of the season in January after he fell out of favour at Spurs.

The deal included a clause which would activate a new 12-month contract at the Allianz Arena if he played a certain number of games at Bayern.

Dier’s contract with Tottenham was set to expire on 30 June.

He has played six times for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including four starts for the defending Bundesliga champions.

Cheltenham-born Dier joined Tottenham in a £4m deal from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in 2014 and made 274 Premier League appearances for the club.

However, he made just one league start under Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou before he followed Harry Kane to Bavaria.

Dier has been capped 49 times by England since making his debut for the Three Lions in November 2015.

Vivianne Miedema: Arsenal striker out for ‘several weeks’ after knee surgery

Vivianne Miedema playing for Arsenal
Vivianne Miedema has played just 252 minutes in seven Women’s Super League games this season since returning from injury in October.

Striker Vivianne Miedema is set for “several weeks” on the sidelines after undergoing “minor knee surgery”, says her Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall.

She started their defeat by Spain last Friday, but Eidevall said “she would have needed the surgery anyway”.

Women’s Super League record goalscorer Miedema only returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October.

Eidevall said: “She didn’t need the surgery because of the 45 minutes she played against Spain.

“It was nothing that the Dutch team did that complicated this or made the situation worse, it was a situation that needed to be fixed anyway.”

There is some positive injury news for Arsenal, however, with Eidevall saying that England captain Leah Williamson is “very much in contention” for Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.

Williamson, who also recently returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, had to pull out of England’s February matches with a hamstring issue.

Scottish Premiership picks: Celtic face Hearts test, Neil Warnock scrutiny & can Blair Spittal thwart Rangers?

Premiership picks graphics

It has already been a busy and eventful week in the Scottish Premiership and this weekend could see more twists and turns at both ends of the table as we approach the business end of the season.

A big inter-city game in Edinburgh, leaders Rangers aiming to extend their winning run against Motherwell, while Aberdeen try to stop their descent into the relegation zone.

Here are some thoughts to whet your appetite for the action on Saturday and Sunday:

Game of the weekend – Hearts v Celtic

Eight days after failing dismally to live up to predictions they might trouble leaders Rangers at Ibrox, Hearts get a second chance to prove they have the potential to challenge Scotland’s big two.

You would normally expect a trip to face the side sitting third to be one full of trepidation, even for reigning champions.

Especially after Hearts’ shock 2-0 win at Celtic Park in December and the fact Brendan Rodgers has lost more league games to the Edinburgh side than any other, including two of his last four trips there.

However, the tight confines of Tynecastle have not proved troublesome for Celtic in the recent past, having won on their latest five visits by an aggregate of 15-5 since their last defeat there in July 2021.

Hearts are currently unbeaten in six on their own patch, and will be determined to show that last Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing at Ibrox, followed by a perhaps fortunate 1-1 home draw in the Edinburgh derby, are mere blips after a run of 12 games unbeaten, 11 of them wins, all but ensured a third-place finish.

However, Rodgers’ Celtic will travel along the M8 full of renewed confidence after Wednesday’s 7-1 thrashing of Dundee just about wiped away talk of a crisis following a couple of draws in an otherwise 12-match unbeaten run that allowed city rivals Rangers to take over at the top.

With Rangers expected to gather another three points at home to Motherwell on Saturday, the pressure will be on Celtic to avoid falling further behind, but the odds and history remain in their favour.

Hearts have not beaten Celtic twice in one season since 2011-12 – once in league and then in Scottish Cup – with the last time they achieved a league double being 2006-07.

To do so, they will likely rely heavily on Lawrence Shankland, the Scotland striker’s midweek equaliser bringing his total to 27 goals for the season and eight in his last seven games.

However, Celtic have their own emerging goal machine in Adam Idah, with five in five and three in his latest two games on loan from Norwich City.

Player to watch – Blair Spittal (Motherwell)

Motherwell ended a run of 12 away games without a win in style by coming from behind to beat bottom side Livingston 3-1 in midweek and, if they are to do anything similar against league leaders Rangers at Ibrox, there is a good chance Blair Spittal will be involved.

The box-to-box midfielder is in fine form for the side now up to eighth in the table, culminating in two devastating finishes in a row against Celtic and Livingston.

In his last nine games, he has found the net six times while also chipping in with three assists as the 28-year-old emerges as one of the Premiership’s most influential midfielders.

However, Motherwell will be up against it as Rangers seek a 12th successive win overall – their longest streak as a top-flight club since 1996 – and a seventh in a row over the visitors.

Manager in spotlight – Neil Warnock (Aberdeen)

Appointing someone who has managed more professional games in England than anyone else – and who holds the record for the most promotions with eight such feats – probably seemed like a safe pair of hands.

However, Neil Warnock has quickly found out that turning round the Pittodrie Titanic will not be easy, describing it as “soul destroying” watching his new Aberdeen charges struggles and suggesting they will be lucky to win another game unless they buck up their ideas.

While Warnock also insists “it is a good job that I am here”, some fans are now not so sure given their drop to ninth in the table – just four points above the relegation play-off place.

Aberdeen are without victory in all five league games under the Englishman – the worst start by a Dons manager since Ebbe Skovdahl failed to win any of his first nine league matches in charge in 1999.

Indeed, Warnock’s only win in six came at home to League 2 Bonnyrigg Rose in the Scottish Cup.

It is early days, but his 16.7% win rate with Aberdeen is his lowest as a manager, surpassing the 17.6% in his second spell with Crystal Palace and the 24.7% during his ill-fated spell in charge of Bury as they slumped from top of the Championship to relegation in 1998-99.

Wednesday’s dismal 2-0 home defeat by St Johnstone has Dons fans fearing a similar slide under Warnock and they will not be betting on a change in fortunes on Saturday as Aberdeen visit Paisley looking to end a run of three straight away defeats.

Not only have Aberdeen not won there in six visits, St Mirren have won three of their latest five meetings, losing only once, and a 3-0 win at Pittodrie in December was one of the embarrassing scorelines that led to Barry Robson’s departure.

A final-minute Bojan Miovski penalty rescued a point for the Dons in a 2-2 draw on Aberdeen’s last visit, but even the much-praised North Macedonia striker’s goals have dried up – his three in two games under Warnock being followed by three without finding the net.

Amid his tinkering with formations, Warnock needs to find a way to get Miovski firing again.

Women’s Super League on TV: Where to watch this weekend’s games with Arsenal v Tottenham on the way

Alessia Russo and Grace Clinton promote the Women's Super League fixture between Arsenal and Tottenham on Sunday 3 March live on BBC Two from 12:15 GMT. The other WSL games broadcast live are: Man City v Everton, Saturday 2 March, 12:00 on Sky, Aston Villa v Liverpool and Bristol City v Brighton, both 14:00 and on FA Player, plus Leicester City v Chelsea at 18:00 on Sky
BBC Two’s coverage of Arsenal v Tottenham starts at 12:15 on Sunday, with kick-off at 12:30. All times are GMT

There is a north London derby on the horizon as the Women’s Super League returns this weekend after the international break.

Arsenal, who were beaten in the last derby, host Tottenham at Emirates Stadium at 12:30 GMT on Sunday in a match which will be shown live on the BBC.

There is also a big game in the relegation battle as the bottom two face each other with Bristol City hosting Brighton.

Manchester City and Chelsea, level on points at the top, play Everton and Leicester respectively.

Here’s what’s coming up in the WSL this weekend and how you can watch every game.

All kick-off times are GMT.

Man City v Everton – Saturday, 12:00 – Sky Sports

The league is poised for an exciting title race after City beat Chelsea to go level on points at the top of the table before the international break.

Gareth Taylor’s side kick off this weekend’s action when they welcome ninth-placed Everton to the Joie Stadium.

The Toffees, who won 2-0 at home to West Ham in their last game, were beaten 4-1 in December in the reverse fixture.

City have won their past 11 games in all competitions – will they extend that record?

Arsenal v Tottenham – Sunday, 12:30 – BBC Two & iPlayer

After a shock defeat by West Ham and being knocked out of the FA Cup by Man City in February, Arsenal recorded a 3-1 win over Manchester United before the break.

They are three points off the top but have lost three times in the league and no team has ever lost more than two games and won the title.

One of those three defeats came against Spurs, who won 1-0 in December. However they haven’t won in the past three league games.

Arsenal have got themselves back on track, Spurs will want to correct their form in the league. Will they pull off another unexpected win on Sunday?

A table showing the bottom six of the WSL, Leicester, Aston Villa, Everton, West Ham, Brighton and Bristol City
Bristol City are bottom of the WSL with one win from 14 games so far

Bristol City v Brighton – Sunday, 14:00 – FA Player

Bristol City, who returned to the WSL this season, are bottom of the league and they’re quickly running out of time to close the gap.

One place – and five points – above them in the league are a Brighton side who won the reverse fixture 3-2 with a 95th-minute goal.

Brighton are still searching for a permanent manager, having sacked Melissa Phillips in February. They’re yet to win in the league without her.

Aston Villa v Liverpool – Sunday, 14:00 – FA Player

Aston Villa were tipped by many to be in the mix with the teams near the top of the table but that crown has been stolen by Liverpool this season.

The Reds sit just two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United and are six points ahead of eighth-placed Aston Villa.

Both sides come into this one off the back of wins in their last league games, with Liverpool having beaten Brighton and Villa having got the better of Tottenham.

West Ham v Man Utd – Sunday, 15:00 – FA Player

Manchester United have a big task at hand if they’re to somehow find a way to reach the Champions League qualification places.

While they’re fourth in the league, they trail third-placed Arsenal by seven points with just eight games remaining.

Earning a spot in Europe is out of the Red Devils’ hands, all they can do is continue to pick up points and hope others drop them.

Out to stop them will be a West Ham side who have their recent triumph over Arsenal still in the back of their minds, albeit with a defeat by Everton coming in their most recent game.

A table showing the top six in the WSL - Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham

Leicester City v Chelsea – Sunday, 18:00 – Sky Sports

It is incredibly tight at the top of the WSL, and Chelsea need to at least match Manchester City for the rest of the season if they are to be successful in their hunt for a fifth successive league title.

They lead the division on goals scored and can’t afford any more slip-ups in the final few months. They could well drop to second given City’s game is on Saturday and will have a chance to reclaim the top spot at Leicester.

The Blues come into this game off the back of that defeat by their title rivals, though, and suffered an injury blow during the international break when striker Mia Fishel tore her anterior cruciate ligament.

British record signing Mayra Ramirez has made three appearances in the league since joining in January but is yet to score. Will she get off the mark in Sunday’s late game?

They’re up against a Leicester City side who will be full of confidence after beating Bristol City 5-2, but history is on Chelsea’s side with the Blues having won the reverse fixture 5-2.

You can listen to Chelsea’s game against Leicester on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra from 17:45 GMT.
